Who Is Hallie Bulleit?
Hallie Bulleit is a performing artist, singer, songwriter, and bassist known for her appearance in Stomp, De La Guarda, Fuerza Bruta, and the Broadway show RENT.
As a singer, songwriter, and bass player, Hallie has recorded and toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe with her bands, The Hissyfits and The Unlovables. Her songs have been heard on MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen and Made, as well as on commercials for The Cartoon Network, Sex and the City, and The View.
Furthermore, she is the lead singer of The LLC, the house band of The Chris Gethard Show. Hallie is married to Chris Gethard.
Early Life: A New Yorker Born for the Stage
Roots in New York City
Hallie Bulleit was born in New York City. The city that never sleeps gave her everything she needed. It gave her its energy. It gave her its rawness. Most importantly, it gave her stages to conquer.
She moved to New York in the 90s. Bulleit was bumming around the East Village. She picked up the bass just as a hobby while still auditioning for theater. That combination — downtown grit and theatrical ambition — would define her entire career.
Education at Kenyon College
She attended Kenyon College — a prestigious liberal arts school in Ohio, well known for its strong arts and drama programmes. Her college years sharpened her artistic instincts. They also gave her the creative foundation to pursue multiple performance disciplines simultaneously.
Stage Career: From Broadway Debut to Aerial Spectacles
Broadway Debut in RENT
Hallie Bulleit made her Broadway debut in RENT and also performed in the show’s original Los Angeles cast with Neil Patrick Harris.
She booked the national tour of RENT first. That was her first professional gig. She came home from the tour and did RENT on Broadway for a while.
RENT — the iconic Jonathan Larson musical set in New York’s East Village — was the perfect vehicle for Hallie. It is a show about struggling artists fighting to survive. Therefore, it resonated deeply with her own lived experience as a young performer navigating New York City’s creative underground.
De La Guarda: The Aerial Highlight
After RENT, Hallie’s physical performance skills opened even bigger doors.
While doing RENT, she auditioned for a show called De La Guarda, which she booked. She described it as perhaps the highlight of her theater career.
Other New York credits include Stomp and the aerial spectacles De La Guarda and Fuerzabruta.
Because she had gained a reputation for someone who could do very, very physical work in theater, she went on to Stomp and then Fuerza Bruta — the second show that the De La Guarda creators brought to New York.
These were not ordinary stage shows. De La Guarda and Fuerza Bruta are legendary immersive aerial theatre experiences. They require extraordinary physicality, stamina, and courage. Hallie excelled at all three.
Stomp: Percussion, Power, and Performance
Stomp is one of New York’s most iconic long-running stage shows. She has also performed as a percussionist and dancer in Stomp. The show’s demands — combining rhythm, dance, and physical theatre — suited her wide-ranging talent perfectly. Furthermore, her Stomp experience deepened her musicality beyond voice and bass into full-body rhythm.
Music Career: Pop-Punk, Bass Lines, and Three Bands
The Unlovables (2003–2016): Her Signature Band
The Unlovables are a New York City-based pop-punk band. The band formed after bassist and singer Hallie Bulleit recorded a handful of songs for a present with Adam Rabuck of Dirt Bike Annie, who encouraged her to continue playing music.
New York pop-punkers The Unlovables carry out sunshiny, Ramones-influenced tunes with gusto and relatable, girl-next-door-style lyrics.
When she was playing with her old punk band The Unlovables, she was probably writing an album every year and a half — roughly 12 songs per stretch. It was enough to keep a band going. She was still working in theatre professionally, doing music on the side.
The Unlovables Discography
The band grew to include drummer Mike Erg and guitarists Frank Leone and Christian Stefos for their debut LP, Crush Boyfriend Heartbreak, released via Whoa Oh Records in 2004. Brook Pridemore replaced Stefos for their sophomore full-length, 2007’s Heartsickle, and The Punk Rock Club EP followed in 2008. The group went on hiatus while pursuing other projects. Along with new guitarist Fid, Bulleit, Erg, and Leone returned in 2015 for a split LP with Dirt Bike Annie titled Reunion Show.
The band gained more popularity after Adult Swim used the song “What You Want/What You Got” in a 30-second Bleach promo. The Unlovables were a perennial crowd favourite during the early 2000s underground pop punk boom, known primarily for their catchy sing-along songs and pleasing vocals.
Vocalist Hallie Bulleit has a voice that immediately commands attention. She is easily recognizable without sounding quite like any other pop-punk vocalist. Her songs have a saccharine and polished sound without veering into the over-produced territory that many mainstream pop-punk bands fall prey to. As a clever lyricist, she examines familiar topics with a witty and personal spin.

The Hissyfits and Hiccup
After recording a few songs with The Unlovables, she joined The Hissyfits and later Hiccup. Both bands allowed her to explore different corners of the indie and punk worlds. Together, these three musical projects built a formidable catalogue of original songs and an international touring résumé that spans the U.S. and Europe.
The LLC: House Band of The Chris Gethard Show
She later became the lead singer for the house band of The Chris Gethard Show.
For the TV show, she writes probably three albums’ worth of material in four months. She described it as completely insane.
This high-output, high-energy creative role proved that Hallie’s prolific musicianship was not confined to independent punk releases. She could write, record, and perform at a professional television pace — and do it brilliantly.
Television Work: From MTV to Live Talk Shows
Soundtrack Work on MTV
In addition to being a talented vocalist, she has penned several soundtracks for television series. For the MTV documentary series My Super Sweet 16, she wrote the soundtrack for one episode. She also wrote soundtracks for three episodes of the MTV series Made.
TV Guest Appearances
She has made numerous TV guest appearances on shows such as Live With Regis and Kelly, Good Morning America, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, and the VH1 Fashion Awards.
Alongside her husband, she made appearances in 136 episodes of The Chris Gethard Show: Public Access from 2011 to 2015.
Commercial Soundtracks
Her songs have been heard in commercials for The Cartoon Network, Sex and the City, and The View. These placements are a testament to the commercial appeal and emotional resonance of her songwriting. Moreover, they brought her music to audiences far beyond the punk underground.
Film Appearances
Hallie has also made her mark on the big screen.
She has appeared in the films The Sunshine Deli & Grocery, Neurotica, and I’ll Come Running, which was selected for the Narrative Competition at the L.A. Film Festival.
She has also appeared in Don’t Think Twice, the critically acclaimed Mike Birbiglia indie film about an improv comedy troupe — a fitting project for someone deeply embedded in New York’s alternative entertainment scene.
