Who Is Emma Raducanu?

Emma Raducanu is a British professional tennis player. She became the first qualifier — male or female — to win a Grand Slam singles title at the 2021 US Open.

Emma Raducanu was born in Toronto to parents whose lives were shaped by migration, education, and discipline. Her father, Ion Răducanu, grew up in Bucharest, Romania, while her mother, Renee Zhai, is from Shenyang, China.

Both her parents work in the finance sector. When she was two years old, the family moved from Toronto to Bromley — London’s southeasternmost borough.

Raducanu holds dual British and Canadian citizenship. She is fluent in English, Romanian, and Chinese. This multicultural identity has become one of her most distinctive qualities — both on and off the court.

The Parents Who Shaped a Champion

Her father, Ian, is from Bucharest, Romania. Her mother, Renee, hails from Shenyang, China. While Ian told her what she couldn’t do, Renee constantly reinforced what she could.

It was her father who pushed her to pick up tennis at the age of 5 and played a hands-on role in her early training. “At the start my dad forced me into tennis. I didn’t like it, but then as I got older and tennis became more of a priority I was pushing myself,” Raducanu told The Times after her 2021 US Open triumph.

Emma is an only child. Therefore, all of her parents’ focus and sacrifice went directly into her development. The discipline they instilled has defined her athletic career.

A Child Who Tried Everything

Beyond tennis, her parents encouraged her to engage in various activities, including go-karting, horse riding, tap dancing, golf, skiing, basketball, ballet, motocross, and swimming, fostering a well-rounded athletic foundation.

However, tennis always pulled her back. She started playing tennis at the age of five at the Bromley Tennis Academy.

“I started playing when I was 5. My earliest memory is riding a bicycle around the park courts where my parents were taking lessons. The man who was training before them would take me round and put cones out, and I tried to hit them as targets,” she has recalled.

Academic Excellence at Newstead Wood School

Emma excelled beyond the court. Her early education was at Bickley Primary School, followed by Newstead Wood School, a selective grammar school in Orpington. Emma excelled academically, achieving an A* in mathematics and an A in economics in her A-Levels.

This balance of academic and athletic achievement reflects the values of structure and excellence her parents modelled every day.

Career Journey: From ITF Courts to Grand Slam Glory

Turning Professional (2018)

Raducanu turned professional in 2018. Her first official title was the ITF $15k title in May 2018, followed by her first ITF $25k title in December 2019.

She was building quietly. She was learning the game at every level. Most importantly, she was developing the mental toughness that would later stun the entire sporting world.

Wimbledon 2021: A Star Is Born

The world first noticed Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon 2021. She became one of the biggest storylines at Wimbledon 2021 after reaching the fourth round as a wildcard, ranked outside the world’s top 300.

She scored wins over Vitalia Diatchenko, Markéta Vondroušová, and Sorana Cîrstea to become the youngest Brit to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon in the Open Era. She withdrew in the fourth round due to breathing difficulties. But the performance had already announced her arrival.

The 2021 US Open: History Is Made

Then came the moment that changed everything.

At the 2021 US Open, Raducanu entered the tournament ranked 150 and had to play the qualifiers, all three of which she won in straight sets. She then went on to dominate the main draw, winning seven matches in a row, again in straight sets, including the final against fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez of Canada.

Emma Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final, 6–4, 6–3, to win the women’s singles tennis title at the 2021 US Open. It was her first major title.

With her win over Leylah Fernandez in the final, the Toronto-born player became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade’s triumph at Wimbledon in 1977.

Emma’s historic run saw her jump 127 places in the WTA rankings to No. 23 and become the 22nd British No. 1 of the Open Era.

MBE Honour From the King (2021)

In recognition of her historic win, King Charles III awarded the teenager an MBE in November 2021.

2022: Managing New Heights and Injuries

The year after a historic Grand Slam win is never easy. Raducanu struggled with injuries and form throughout 2022, dropping as low as No. 83 after a first-round exit at the US Open.

Nevertheless, she made the quarterfinal at Stuttgart, losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, and reached the quarterfinal at Washington, DC. She was still fighting. She was still learning.

2023: Surgery and Silence

2023 brought its most difficult test yet. In May 2023, Raducanu announced that she had undergone surgeries on her hands and ankle due to recurring injuries. These kept her out of action for the rest of the year.

Setbacks are part of every great athlete’s story. Because of this, her return in 2024 felt even more remarkable.

2024: The Comeback

In January 2024, the 21-year-old returned to tennis action, just in time to regain fitness and form ahead of Paris 2024.

She returned in 2024 to improved performances, including reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and the semifinals at the Rothesay Open in Nottingham. She ended the year back in the top 100.

She also achieved her first career Top 10 wins — over No. 5 Jessica Pegula at Eastbourne and No. 9 Maria Sakkari at Wimbledon.

Additionally, Raducanu won her opening-round match against Zarazua of Mexico at Wimbledon 2024, before playing Mixed Doubles alongside Andy Murray in what was the Scot’s farewell appearance at Wimbledon.

2025: Consistency Returns

Raducanu had a better year in 2025 at the Grand Slams, reaching the second round at the French Open and the third round at the other three majors.

Her best result in 2025 was reaching the semifinals at Washington, DC. She also reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Open — a WTA 1000 event — for the first time.

She ended the 2025 season ranked inside the Top 30 at No. 29.

At Wimbledon 2025, Emma defeated 2023 Wimbledon winner Markéta Vondroušová 6–3, 6–3 on Centre Court in the second round, before losing to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.

2026: Still Climbing

As of 2026, Emma Raducanu holds a current WTA singles ranking of No. 37 and has accumulated total career prize money of over US $6.5 million.

Emma Raducanu is a right-handed player with a two-handed backhand. She stands at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) tall.

Her aggressive baseline game is characterized by powerful groundstrokes and precise serving, which has produced dominant performances — particularly against lower-ranked players.

Her ability to stay composed under pressure is perhaps her greatest asset. At the 2021 US Open, she did not drop a single set across ten matches. This remains one of the most remarkable feats in Grand Slam history.

Coaching Journey

Emma has worked with multiple coaches throughout her career. Raducanu began a coaching trial with Vladimir Platenik at the 2025 Indian Wells tournament, but that did not work out. She is now working with Mark Petchey on an ad-hoc basis.

At the end of 2024, Raducanu added renowned fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura to her team in a bid to end her injury woes.

BJK Cup: Serving Great Britain

At the BJK Cup Finals in November 2024, she helped Great Britain upset Germany by defeating Jule Niemeier in straight sets. After that, she defeated Rebecca Marino as Great Britain advanced to the semifinals by defeating the reigning champions, Canada.
