Who Is Travis Kelce?

Travis Michael Kelce is an American professional football tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. He was born on October 5, 1989, in Westlake, Ohio, and raised in nearby Cleveland Heights.

Travis Kelce holds the NFL records for most playoff receptions (178), most 100-yard playoff games (9), and most Super Bowl receptions (35), surpassing Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. Furthermore, he has been selected to 11 consecutive Pro Bowls and earned four First-team All-Pro honors.

Beyond football, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married in July 2026 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Their union has cemented Kelce as one of the most recognized athletes on the planet.

Early Life: Cleveland Heights, Ohio

A Family Built for Sport

Kelce was born to Ed and Donna Kelce. The family — which includes elder brother Jason Kelce, also an NFL player — lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Their mother worked as a bank executive, and their dad was a manufacturer’s representative.

Both parents had been athletes. Donna Kelce competed in track and field, and Ed Kelce was a high-school football player. Ed Kelce admitted to ESPN in 2020, “I would probably give it up and say athletic talent comes more from her side of the family,” given that Donna Kelce’s brother and father both played college football.

Athleticism runs in the family. His mother, Donna, was a former junior Olympian in track and field. Therefore, Travis and Jason Kelce did not stumble into greatness. They were raised for it.

Cleveland Heights: A City That Shaped Him Forever

Cleveland Heights is not a place Travis Kelce left behind. It is a place he carries with him.

He does not say “Travis Kelce, University of Cincinnati” during game broadcasts, as his brother does. He says simply, “Travis Kelce, from Cleveland Heights, Ohio.”

Jason and Travis spent their youth ticking nearly every box on the brotherhood checklist. They were both involved in several sports growing up — football, basketball, baseball, and more. This competitive upbringing built two of the greatest players in NFL history.

High School: A Three-Sport Star

Travis attended Cleveland Heights High School, where he was a standout three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He excelled as the quarterback for the football team, earning All-Lake Erie League honors in his senior year after accumulating 2,539 total yards of offense.

During his senior year, he rushed for over 1,000 yards, threw for more than 1,500 yards, and accounted for 31 total touchdowns. Those numbers earned him All-Lake Erie League honors and made it clear he was destined for bigger stages.

However, Kelce was rated as just a two-star recruit. Big schools passed on him. He chose to follow his brother to Cincinnati instead.

College Career: University of Cincinnati

Following Jason to Cincinnati

He accepted a scholarship from the University of Cincinnati, choosing the Bearcats over several smaller programs. He joined his brother Jason, who was already a starter on the team, making their time together a special family chapter.

He chose Cincinnati over offers from Eastern Michigan, Akron, and Miami. He played tight end and quarterback out of the Wildcat formation.

A Setback That Nearly Ended Everything

His college path was not without difficulty. A failed drug test in 2010 caused him to miss his entire sophomore season. Nevertheless, he returned determined. He came back stronger.

After a standout senior season at the University of Cincinnati, where he was named the College Football Performance Awards Tight End of the Year, Travis Kelce entered the 2013 NFL Draft.

During his three-year collegiate career, Kelce recorded 59 receptions for 875 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. He also received first-team All-Big East honors in 2012.

Earning His Degree — With a Beer in Hand

Almost a decade after leaving college to enter the draft, Travis earned his degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2022 — but didn’t pick up his diploma until April 2024 during a surprise commencement ceremony after he and Jason taped a live episode of New Heights at Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena. The graduate was already holding a can of beer as he approached the dean for his congratulatory handshake, after which he promptly chugged it.

NFL Career: Building a Dynasty in Kansas City

The 2013 Draft and a Rocky Start

Travis ended up only the fifth tight end picked in the 2013 NFL Draft, going first in the third round to the Chiefs. Specifically, the Chiefs selected him with the 63rd overall pick.

His rookie year began with a knee injury in the preseason. He missed the entire 2013 season. Most players never recover from such a start. Kelce was not most players.

The Rise: 2014–2019

Kelce became a regular in the 2014 NFL season, starting in 11 games while appearing in 16 regular-season games. From there, his ascent was relentless.

Travis Kelce became the first tight end to record four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and later broke the record for most 1,000-yard seasons by a tight end — seven in total. Moreover, he is the only tight end in NFL history with multiple 100-plus reception seasons.

Super Bowl LIV — February 2020: First Ring

The Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. Travis Kelce was at the center of it all. Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers, and Kelce earned his first Super Bowl ring — beginning one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.

Super Bowl LVII — February 2023: The Brothers Bowl

The following season, he caught a career-high 12 touchdowns. The Chiefs advanced to Super Bowl LVII in February 2023. Their opponent, the Eagles, featured Jason Kelce at center — the first time the brothers had faced off in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs won a thriller, 38–35, and Travis Kelce had a stellar game, catching six passes for 81 yards and one touchdown. It was a historic night for American sport. Two brothers. One Super Bowl. One ring per family.

Super Bowl LVIII — February 2024: Back-to-Back Glory

Kelce had another strong season in 2023, and the Chiefs won a second consecutive Super Bowl, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25–22.

En route to his third title in 2024, he broke Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice’s record for career playoff receptions and now has 178 total. He also became the all-time leader in Super Bowl receptions — 35 catches, surpassing Rice.

2024 Season: Super Bowl LIX Defeat

Kelce’s performance slowed down in the 2024 season, during which he had only 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns — both career lows. Nevertheless, the Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl. This time, the Philadelphia Eagles won 40–22, denying Kansas City a historic three-peat.

Kelce confirmed shortly after the game he would return for a 13th season. “When I really thought about it this offseason, I got back to wanting to focus on this game and getting the most out of this game as I can, while I’m still putting on the cleats and pads,” he said.

2025 Season: History at 36 Years Old

Kelce made history with a team-leading 851 yards receiving in 2025 at the age of 36. He joined Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez as the only tight ends in NFL history with 800-plus receiving yards in a season at the age of 36 or older.

Kelce’s 12 receiving yards in Week 18 of the 2025 season pushed him over 13,000 receiving yards for his career, making him the third tight end ever to cross that mark. His three catches in that game vaulted him over Terrell Owens for the eighth-most receptions in NFL history.

2026 Contract: Still a Chief

Travis Kelce officially signed a three-year contract extension with the Chiefs on March 23, 2026. The deal has a maximum value of $57.735 million over three years. If the full value is realized, he would become the highest-paid NFL tight end in terms of average annual value at just under $19.25 million.

He enters his 14th NFL season with no signs of stopping.

Career Records and Milestones

No player in NFL history has as many playoff receptions (178), 100-yard playoff games (9), or Super Bowl receptions (35) as Kelce.

With 6,158 yards after catch, Kelce is ranked at the top amongst all tight ends in NFL history. He now owns the third-most YAC, regardless of position, in the entire NFL.

Kelce was the fastest player to reach 900 career receptions, doing so against the Raiders in just 158 games. The previous record was held by Jason Witten in 181 games.

Furthermore, he holds the record for career postseason receiving touchdowns by a tight end (19) and career postseason receiving yards by a tight end (1,903).

Entertainment and Business: Building an Empire Beyond Football

New Heights Podcast — A $100 Million Deal

Travis and his brother Jason co-host the chart-topping New Heights podcast, which signed a $100M+ deal with Amazon’s Wondery in 2024. The show has become one of the most popular sports podcasts in the world. Together, the Kelce brothers have built a media brand that transcends football.

Television and Film

Travis hosted Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? in 2025, made his acting debut in Ryan Murphy’s FX horror drama Grotesquerie in 2025, and appeared in Happy Gilmore 2.

“I’m looking for movie deals,” Kelce said on his podcast after landing his first dramatic role. His entertainment ambitions are clearly serious. Moreover, Kelce has said he could see himself working as a game show host or a color commentator for NFL games after his playing career ends.

1587 Prime Steakhouse

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are opening 1587 Prime, a Kansas City-based steakhouse in partnership with Noble 33, inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel. The name “1587” combines their jersey numbers. The restaurant will feature multi-sensory dining aspects and subtle nods to the players themselves.

Kelce confirmed the venture, saying: “It’s just another thing that we want to bring to Kansas City, to be able to show our appreciation for the city, knowing how much they love their food and how much they love their football.”

Endorsements and Investments

Travis’s investments include shares in Alpine F1, Garage Beer, and the new Kansas City steakhouse 1587 Prime with Mahomes. He also profits from endorsements with Nike, Bud Light, Pfizer, and McDonald’s.

His foundation, Eighty-Seven & Running, continues to provide opportunities in STEM, arts, and sports for underprivileged youth.

Love Story: Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

How It All Began (Summer 2023)

In 2023, Kelce became a household name among many non-football fans after beginning a romantic relationship with pop music superstar Taylor Swift, who began attending many of his games. The star football player, in turn, saw her perform at several concerts.

He left the concert with “such a desire” to meet her after feeling “mesmerized” and “captivated” by what he saw.

The Engagement — August 2025

When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement with a simple Instagram post in August 2025, it broke the internet. “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the couple wrote in the caption, sharing photos from the proposal.

“During that recording, the entire time I’m planning, like, ‘I’m gonna ask this woman to marry me after this,'” Kelce recalled on a later episode of New Heights. “Obviously, the beginning of the season with Taylor is one I’ll remember forever.”

The Wedding — July 4, 2026

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot in an intimate ceremony. Austin Swift served as her “Man of Honor,” while Jason Kelce served as Travis’s best man. They were the only members of the wedding party.

The ceremony looks were created by Christian Dior Haute Couture. Adam Sandler officiated the wedding.

The wedding took place at Madison Square Garden in front of over 1,000 people. “It looked like a forest,” an insider told PEOPLE about the decor inside the arena.

Personal Life

The Kelce Family

In a January 2025 podcast episode, the brothers revealed their Croatian ancestry. Travis is exceptionally close to his mother, Donna Kelce, who became a national figure in her own right for cheering on both her sons at NFL events — often in rival team jerseys.

Previous Relationships

In 2016, Kelce starred in his own reality dating show called Catching Kelce, where he chose Maya Benberry as the winner. Their relationship was short-lived. He was in a long-term, on-and-off relationship with social media influencer Kayla Nicole from 2017 to 2022. He is now married to Taylor Swift.
