Who Is Patrick Mahomes?

Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was born on September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas. He is the son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr. and event planner Randi Martin Mahomes.

He is a quarterback. He is a champion. Most importantly, he is a generational talent unlike anything the NFL has seen before.

In his second season as a professional in 2018, he was named the NFL’s most valuable player. He later led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowls LIV in 2020, LVII in 2023, and LVIII in 2024. He was named MVP of all three games.

Mahomes tops the franchise’s career passing charts in multiple categories, ranking first in passer rating at 100.8, passing yards at 35,939, and passing touchdowns at 267. Furthermore, he holds the fourth-highest passer rating in NFL history among players with at least 1,500 passing attempts.

Born Into Sport

Growing up, Patrick was influenced by his father’s sports career. This led the family to move frequently due to his father’s various team assignments.

Mahomes grew up mostly in Tyler, Texas, with his white mother after she and his Black father separated when their son was six years old.

Despite this disruption, sports remained the constant thread in his life. He grew up watching his father pitch in major league stadiums. Baseball was in his blood. However, football became his calling.

A Multi-Sport Athlete

Patrick was exceptional at multiple sports from a very young age. He played baseball and basketball at high school level. However, football was where he truly shone.

Patrick and the former Brittany Matthews began dating in 2012 during his sophomore year of high school. Even then, those who knew him could see that this young man from Tyler had something special.

Texas Tech: Breaking Every Record in Sight

After high school, Mahomes chose Texas Tech University over baseball. It proved to be the right decision.

Both records are Division I-FBS records. Single-game yards passing was 734, tied against Oklahoma on October 22, 2016. Single-game yards total offense was 819.

Following his remarkable 2018 season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years during the 2019 season. On February 2, 2020, Mahomes guided Kansas City to victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, earning the title of Super Bowl MVP.

With a bright future ahead, Mahomes secured a historic ten-year contract extension worth $450 million in July 2020, solidifying his position as one of the highest-paid players in NFL history.

Super Bowl LVII (2023): Back on Top

In 2023, Mahomes returned to the Super Bowl stage and secured his second title by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in a thrilling 38–35 match. He once again displayed his exemplary skills, culminating in a game-winning touchdown pass. Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP for the second time, further solidifying his place among NFL legends.

Super Bowl LVIII (2024): History in Overtime

Then came the moment that secured his place among the all-time greats.

His achievements continued in 2024, as he led the Chiefs to an overtime comeback against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, bringing his MVP total to three and establishing him as one of only three quarterbacks to achieve this feat, along with Joe Montana and Tom Brady.

In the Super Bowl, Mahomes threw for 333 yards with two touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime to Mecole Hardman, as the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in just the second Super Bowl in history to go to overtime.

Kansas City became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots nineteen years earlier.

Super Bowl LIX (2025): The Quest for Three-Peat Falls Short

All eyes were on the Chiefs entering the 2024 season, as Kansas City tried to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three consecutive championships. Mahomes — lacking a dynamic receiver corps — finished at or near career lows in passing yards and touchdowns. Nevertheless, the Chiefs finished with a 15–2 record and advanced to the Super Bowl in a rematch against the Eagles.

In that game, Mahomes’s hopes for a three-peat were roundly dashed. He was sacked a career-high six times and threw two interceptions, and the Chiefs lost 40–22.

The loss stung. However, it showed that even the greatest teams face adversity. It also fueled Mahomes’s hunger to return.

2025 Season: Records Broken, Season Ended Early

The 2025 NFL season was a tale of two halves for Mahomes. On one hand, he continued to shatter records at a breathtaking pace.

In Week 6 of 2025, Mahomes became the fastest player in NFL history to throw 300 career touchdown passes, doing so in just 139 career games. In Week 12, he became the fastest quarterback to surpass 35,000 career passing yards, doing so in just 123 games.

In Week 4 of 2025, Mahomes became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to throw for 250 touchdowns, at just 30 years and 11 days old.

On the other hand, tragedy struck late in the season. His season ended early when he suffered a torn ACL injury in Week 14. This meant the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in his NFL career.

Despite this setback, his legacy and records speak for themselves. He will return. Kansas City knows it. The NFL knows it.

Mahomes married his high school sweetheart, Brittany Mahomes, in March 2022. The couple has three children.

Patrick and the former Brittany Matthews began dating in 2012 during his sophomore year of high school. The pair stayed together while attending separate colleges, with Patrick attending Texas Tech and Brittany playing soccer for the University of Texas.

Three Children: Sterling, Bronze, and Golden

Their elder daughter Sterling was born in February 2021. Patrick III, their son who goes by “Bronze,” arrived in November 2022. The couple then welcomed another daughter, Golden Raye, in January 2025.

The Mahomes announced Golden’s birth in January, sharing a black-and-white photo of their newborn’s feet on Instagram along with the caption, “•Golden Raye Mahomes• 1/12/25.”
