Medha Shankar
29 years old
Who Is Medha Shankar?
Medha Shankar is an Indian actress and trained Hindustani classical singer. She was born on 1 August 1997 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. She is one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from Bollywood in recent years.
She rose to nationwide fame for her soulful portrayal of Shraddha Joshi in the critically acclaimed 2023 biographical drama 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Her performance earned her the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut and the IMDb Breakout Star STARmeter Award in early 2024.
In 12th Fail, she performed her own vocals for the song “Bolo Na” on location, without studio dubbing — a feat made possible by her years of Hindustani classical music training.
Before 12th Fail, she had just ₹257 in her bank account. Today, she is one of Bollywood’s most talked-about rising stars.
Early Life: A Shy Child With Big Dreams
Growing Up in Noida
Medha Shankar was born and raised in the city of Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Growing up, Medha was a shy child with aspirations of becoming a doctor. However, her destiny had other plans.
Her father, Abhay Shankar, is a businessman. Her mother, Archana Raj Shankar, is a choreographer. This artistic household gave young Medha her first exposure to the world of performance and creative expression.
The Voice Trained for Stages
Long before she stepped in front of a film camera, Medha was training her voice. She pursued Hindustani classical music from an early age. This discipline gave her a musical foundation that would later become central to her acting career.
Furthermore, this classical training turned out to be the very reason director Vidhu Vinod Chopra chose her for 12th Fail. Chopra wasn’t just looking for an actress — he wanted someone who could sing.
Education: From School to NIFT
She attended Vidya Bharati Public School in Noida before pursuing higher education.
She earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi. She later secured All India Rank 15 in her entrance examination for the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), where she completed a Master’s degree in Fashion Management.
This combination of commerce, fashion, and music gave her a uniquely versatile foundation. Therefore, when she arrived in Mumbai, she brought with her far more than just an ambition to act.
Career Journey: From Beauty Pageants to Bollywood
The First Steps: Modelling and Beauty Pageants (2016–2018)
Medha Shankar started her career by competing in beauty pageants. She participated in the Campus Princess 2016 beauty pageant organized by the Miss India Organization.
She then moved into modelling. She was featured in television commercials and print advertisements for brands like Coca-Cola, Paytm, and Big Bazaar.
In 2018, she made the bold decision to move to Mumbai and pursue acting full-time.
Acting Debut: Beecham House (2019)
After trying her hand in modelling, Medha made her acting debut with the 2019 British series Beecham House, where she played the role of Roshanara.
This international exposure gave her early confidence. It also gave her invaluable experience working on a high-production British historical drama. However, the real journey was only beginning.
Building the Portfolio: Shaadisthan and Dil Bekaraar (2021)
Her Hindi film debut came with the musical drama Shaadisthan (2021) as Arshi, followed by the web series Dil Bekaraar (2021).
These supporting roles helped her refine her craft. They also helped her build the quiet persistence that would sustain her through years of rejection before her breakthrough.
Max, Min and Meowzaki (2022)
She is also known for her role in Max, Min and Meowzaki (2022). The film later received a wider theatrical release in July 2026, reaching an even larger audience.
The Breakthrough: 12th Fail (2023)
The Role That Changed Everything
12th Fail is a 2023 Indian biographical drama film written and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film stars Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, alongside Anant Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Priyanshu Chatterjee. It was released theatrically on 27 October 2023.
In the film, Medha played Shraddha Joshi — an IRS officer and the love interest of the protagonist Manoj Kumar Sharma, played by Vikrant Massey. The role required her to portray strength, vulnerability, and unwavering conviction in equal measure.
A Performance That Silenced the Industry
Film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote that “Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar occupy the centre stage with aplomb.” The film earned widespread appreciation for its authentic portrayal of the grueling UPSC examination journey and the tender relationship at its core.
She also lent her own voice to the song “Bolo Na” — performing it live on location, without studio dubbing. That single detail revealed to the world exactly who Medha Shankar was: a complete artist, not just a performer.
Awards and Recognition
Her standout performance earned her the IMDb Breakout Star STARmeter Award in early 2024. She also won the following:
- Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut (2024) — Won
- Pinkvilla Award for Best Actress — Jury Choice (2024) — Won
Beyond 12th Fail: Continuing the Journey

Medha Shankar reprised her role as Shraddha Joshi in Zero Se Restart (2024), a documentary that followed the real journey behind 12th Fail. It was released on 13 December 2024 and offered audiences a deeply personal look at the making of the original film.
Maalik (2025)
Medha appeared in Maalik, released on 11 July 2025. The film further established her as a sought-after actress beyond the 12th Fail universe.
Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 (2026): Her First Lead Role
Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is a 2026 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Prasshant Jha. Produced under Soundrya Production and Zee Studios, the film stars Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankar. It is a spiritual sequel to Ginny Weds Sunny (2020).
The film teaser was released on 19 March 2026, followed by the trailer on 9 April 2026. The film was released theatrically on 24 April 2026.
This marked Medha’s first full-scale lead role in a Bollywood release — a major milestone in her career.
The producers stated: “We are excited to bring a new chapter to the Ginny Weds Sunny universe. With Avinash and Medha, we have found a refreshing and vibrant pairing.”
Max, Min and Meowzaki — Wider Release (2026)
The festival film Max, Min and Meowzaki, in which she plays Minara “Min” Hussain, received a wider theatrical release on 24 July 2026, further expanding her audience beyond Hindi mainstream cinema.
Upcoming: An Untitled Detective Comedy
According to IMDb, Medha has also completed filming for an untitled detective comedy, which is yet to receive a release date. It promises to showcase a completely new dimension of her talent.
Personal Life: Private but Purposeful
Medha Shankar keeps her personal life largely away from public scrutiny. Despite her growing popularity after 12th Fail, she has maintained a private personal life and rarely discusses her family in public.
She has focused her public appearances and interviews on her work, career aspirations, and artistic interests rather than her personal life.
She is currently unmarried. What is clear, however, is that her personal philosophy aligns closely with the stories she tells on screen — stories of resilience, quiet determination, and the courage to begin again.
