Who Is V (Kim Taehyung)?
Kim Tae-hyung, known professionally as V (뷔), is a South Korean singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor under Big Hit Music. He is a member of the boy group BTS, holding the positions of vocalist, dancer, and visual.
V is recognized for his distinctive baritone voice and successful solo career, with notable releases including Layover, “Love Me Again,” and “Slow Dancing.”
Furthermore, V is among the few idols in the industry who have been officially recognized by the South Korean government for their cultural contributions.
As of December 2024, V has surpassed 4 billion streams across all solo credits on Spotify, making him the most successful K-pop solo artist on the platform, with six songs exceeding 400 million streams each.
In short, V is not just a K-pop idol. He is a global cultural force.
Early Life: From Daegu to Stardom
Birth and Childhood in Geochang
V was born Kim Tae-hyung on December 30, 1995, in Daegu, South Korea, and grew up in Geochang County. He is the eldest of three children, with a younger brother and sister.
He spent much of his childhood with his grandparents in Geochang County before reuniting with his family. His siblings are Kim Eun Jin and Kim Jong Gyu. Both are kept carefully away from public attention, reflecting his deep respect for family privacy.
Growing up in a rural county gave Taehyung a grounded perspective. It gave him humility. Most importantly, it gave him a hunger to create something bigger than himself.
A Saxophone Dream That Led to Stardom
Before BTS, there was music of a very different kind. Taehyung’s passion for music began early. He studied saxophone, which helped him develop a strong foundation in musical theory and performance. This classical grounding would later give his voice its extraordinary depth and control.
He auditioned for Big Hit Entertainment not as a planned career move, but almost by chance — accompanying a friend to the audition. He was the one who got in.
Education: From Arts High School to University
He graduated from Korea Arts High School and later obtained a bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting Entertainment from Global Cyber University. He is currently on a leave of absence from the master’s degree programme in Advertising Media at Hanyang Cyber University.
This academic trajectory reflects a man who balances artistic talent with genuine intellectual curiosity.
BTS Career: Becoming the World’s Biggest Band
Debut With BTS (June 13, 2013)
He debuted as a member of BTS on June 13, 2013, with the group’s first single album 2 Cool 4 Skool.
Big Hit Music originally planned BTS as a hip-hop group, so it was not until 2016 that they began expanding their music to incorporate more genres. That expansion revealed something remarkable. It revealed V.
His voice — a rare true baritone in K-pop — stood apart from the very beginning. His stage presence was magnetic. Therefore, he quickly became not only the group’s vocalist but also its defining visual.
Solo Songs Within BTS: Stigma, Singularity, Inner Child
Even before his solo debut, V delivered standalone masterpieces within BTS’s group albums. He released three solo songs under BTS — starting with “Stigma” in 2016, followed by “Singularity” in 2018, and the celebrated “Inner Child” in 2020. All of these songs remained at the top of South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and brought him widespread media attention.
Each track showcased a different emotional dimension. “Singularity,” in particular, became a critical favourite — a darkly sensual, neo-soul piece that critics praised as one of the finest BTS album openers ever recorded.
BTS Record-Breaking Milestones
As part of BTS, V contributed to some of the most astonishing achievements in modern music history.
BTS has charted six number-one Billboard 200 albums, including Love Yourself: Tear, Love Yourself: Answer, Map of the Soul: Persona, Map of the Soul: 7, BE, and Proof.
BTS has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and is the bestselling artist in South Korea according to the Circle Chart.
Additionally, BTS became the most-streamed K-pop act of 2025, crossing over 43 billion Spotify streams across all credits — a milestone achieved even during their group hiatus.
Acting Debut: Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth (2016)
Beyond music, V also carved out a space in acting. He made his acting debut under his birth name in 2016 with the KBS2 drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, playing the character Hansung.
As part of the drama’s soundtrack, he released “It’s Definitely You” with fellow BTS member Jin. His performance in the historical drama earned praise for its emotional authenticity and natural screen presence — demonstrating that his artistry extended well beyond the recording studio.
Solo Music Career: Pre-Debut Singles (2019–2022)
Early Self-Composed Singles
Long before his official solo debut, V was already releasing music on his own terms. As a solo artist, he released two self-composed digital singles — “풍경 (Scenery)” and “Winter Bear” — in 2019.
Both were released without formal promotion. Both went viral instantly. “Scenery,” composed and written entirely by V, became one of the most streamed self-composed songs in K-pop history.
OSTs That Captured Hearts
V demonstrated his versatility through multiple acclaimed original soundtracks. He recorded “Sweet Night” for the South Korean drama Itaewon Class in 2020. In December 2020, he released “Snow Flower” featuring Peakboy. On December 24, 2021, he released “Christmas Tree” as the soundtrack for Our Beloved Summer.
Each OST reached number one on Korean charts. Each one demonstrated the unique emotional depth that only V’s voice could convey.
Layover: A Historic Solo Debut (September 2023)
The Album That Shocked the World
V made his official solo debut with his first mini album Layover on September 8, 2023.
The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced successful singles, including “Love Me Again,” “Rainy Days,” and “Slow Dancing.”
Layover consists of six songs blending pop, jazz, and R&B. Music critics from NME, Associated Press, Billboard, and TimeOut named Layover among 2023’s top releases, recognizing V’s artistic evolution beyond BTS’s group sound.
Record After Record
The records set by Layover were extraordinary. V became the first solo artist to top the Hanteo Charts in three countries — China, Japan, and the USA — simultaneously. He also became the first solo artist to sell two million copies of a debut solo album on Hanteo Charts.
Additionally, V became the first Korean soloist to have all tracks of an album charting on Billboard’s Global Excl. US chart for two consecutive weeks.
Layover alone has accumulated over 2 billion streams on Spotify. Therefore, it remains one of the most critically and commercially successful K-pop solo debut albums of all time.
“FRI(END)S” and 2024 Releases: Breaking Records From the Barracks
Even while serving in the military, V kept breaking records.
On March 15, 2024, V released the digital single “FRI(END)S” — a pop, soul, and R&B track.
His single “FRI(END)S” topped iTunes charts in over 100 countries, becoming the first song in 2024 to do so. Furthermore, “FRI(END)S” earned the biggest first-week debut by any K-pop act on Spotify in 2024, with over 31 million streams.
He also released “Winter Ahead” on November 29, 2024, and a new version of the 1942 Bing Crosby classic “White Christmas” on December 6, 2024.
Military Service: Duty, Discipline, and National Pride
Enlistment (December 11, 2023)
He enlisted for his mandatory military service on December 11, 2023. He enlisted alongside fellow BTS members RM, Jungkook, and Jimin, forming a poignant moment in the band’s journey as they paused group activities to fulfil their national responsibilities.
Elite Assignment: Special Task Force
After completing basic training, Taehyung was assigned to the prestigious “Ssangyong Unit” of the 2nd Army Corps, serving in the Military Police Corps’ Special Task Force — a position considered elite.
This was not a standard assignment. It was a testament to his physical conditioning and discipline.
Honourable Discharge (June 10, 2025)
On June 10, 2025, Kim Taehyung was officially discharged from South Korea’s mandatory military service after 18 months of active duty.
The day his discharge photos went up on Instagram, the post crossed 13.8 million likes and 1 million shares — making him the first K-pop artist and only Asian act to have four Instagram posts with 1 million or more shares.
In front of fans and media gathered at the discharge location, V spoke directly to ARMY: “To all the ARMYs who have waited for us in the military, I want to say I am truly, truly grateful. Please wait just a little longer and we will return with a really cool performance.”
Fashion Empire: Celine, Cartier, and a Cultural Revolution
V is not just a music icon. He is a fashion powerhouse.
Celine Brand Ambassador (March 2023)
On March 15, 2023, fashion label Celine announced V as their newest brand ambassador — referred to as the new “Celine Boy.”
In just 10 months, from March to December 2023, Taehyung generated $274 million in earned media value (EMV) for Celine — the most the brand has ever received in a single year from any ambassador.
Celine saw a 591% increase in operating profit in 2023, thanks to its growing presence in the Korean market after appointing Kim Taehyung as their brand ambassador. Celine Korea’s revenue increased sixfold to reach 307.2 billion won.
Lefty ranked him the number one male fashion influencer of 2023 and third overall — despite his absence from fashion week and major fashion events.
Cartier Brand Ambassador (July 2023)
On July 19, 2023, V was revealed as the new global ambassador for Cartier, making his debut in a campaign for the brand’s Panthère line.
Two of the world’s most prestigious luxury houses. One artist. An unprecedented level of influence.

V’s trophy cabinet reflects the breadth of his impact.

BTS Reunion: The Comeback Ahead
With all seven members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook now discharged, the BTS reunion is imminent.
V’s discharge added momentum to BTS’s gradual reunion, with the group having already announced plans for a full comeback in 2025, raising expectations for new music, world tours, and a redefined BTS era.
HYBE CEO Lee Jae-sang has confirmed that preparations are underway, noting that “BTS, as global artists, must carefully consider their direction. We are continuing to discuss their vision and what’s next.”
J-Hope told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe that their reunion is going to be epic. ARMY around the world is counting every second.
Personal Life: Art, Photography, and a Private Heart
Photography Under the Alias “Vante”
V is passionate about photography and often takes analog-style photos under his artistic alias “Vante.” He once dreamed of holding a solo exhibition. His photographs carry the same emotional sensitivity as his music — deeply personal, visually striking, and quietly profound.
Painting, Sketching, and Artistic Pursuits
He enjoys painting during his free time and has shared several of his artworks on social media, many inspired by abstract and modern styles. This multidimensional artistic identity sets him apart from his peers in an industry that often rewards a single lane of talent.
Yeontan: A Dog Who Inspired an Album
One of the most beloved aspects of V’s public persona was his relationship with his dog, Yeontan. In December 2024, V shared the heartfelt news of Yeontan’s passing. Yeontan had been a significant part of V’s life and had even inspired elements of his solo work, including the Layover album artwork and merchandise. The global outpouring of sympathy reflected the deep bond fans felt with both V and his beloved companion.
Relationship Status
V has stated in interviews that he places great importance on privacy regarding his personal relationships. As of 2026, no relationship has been officially confirmed. He remains famously private — letting his art speak the loudest.
