Who Is J-Hope?

Jung Ho-seok, better known by his stage name j-hope, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer under Big Hit Music. He is a member of the globally celebrated boy group BTS, holding the positions of rapper and main dancer.

He is referred to as the “sunshine” of the group due to his bright and energetic personality. Yet beneath that radiant exterior lies one of K-pop’s most disciplined artists — a self-made creator who has consistently pushed boundaries both within BTS and as a solo force.

J-Hope became the first South Korean artist to headline a main stage at a major U.S. festival with his 2022 Lollapalooza debut. Early Life: Dance, Dreams, and Gwangju

Born in the Heart of South Korea

Jung Ho-seok was born on February 18, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea, where he lived with his parents and an older sister.

Gwangju is a city of culture. It is a city of art. Most importantly, it is a city known for nurturing some of South Korea’s most creative talents. Growing up there gave J-Hope a rich, community-centred foundation.

His zodiac sign is Aquarius. He is 32 years old as of 2026. He is the third oldest member in BTS.

A Prodigy on the Dance Floor

J-Hope did not simply love dance. He lived it. He had been relatively well-known for his skills in dance prior to his debut. He won various local prizes for dance, including placing first in a national dance competition in 2008.

That victory at just 14 years old announced something extraordinary. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the world of professional performance would eventually come calling.

The Neuron Dance Crew

Before BTS, he was already turning heads as part of the Neuron dance crew in Gwangju. That street dance background shaped his style into something bold, expressive, and uniquely his.

He debuted with BTS on June 13, 2013. From the very beginning, his role was clear. He was the one who brought the energy. He was the one who lit up every stage he stepped onto.

Hope World Mixtape (2018)

As a solo artist, he released his first mixtape Hope World on March 2, 2018. The project was a bold statement of creative independence. It showcased his ability to craft cohesive, vibrant music on his own terms.

“Chicken Noodle Soup” — A Billboard First (2019)

In 2019, J-Hope became the first BTS member to chart solo on the Billboard Hot 100 with his hit “Chicken Noodle Soup” featuring Becky G. It was a major moment for him and for K-pop fans everywhere.

Additionally, on May 12, 2024, “Chicken Noodle Soup” featuring Becky G became J-Hope’s first solo music video to hit 400 million views on YouTube.

Jack in the Box — Official Solo Debut (July 2022)

He made his official solo debut with his first studio album Jack in the Box on July 15, 2022.

The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. It was a critically acclaimed project. It was bold, experimental, and deeply personal. Moreover, it signalled that J-Hope was not merely a member of BTS trying a solo side project — he was a genuine solo force in his own right.

Lollapalooza Chicago 2022: Making History

The same month as Jack in the Box, he became the first South Korean artist to headline a main stage at a major U.S. festival with his Lollapalooza debut.

At Lollapalooza Chicago, the rapper made history as the first-ever South Korean act to headline a major U.S. festival. The festival was dubbed “Hobipalooza” to mark the rapper’s performance.

That moment did not just belong to J-Hope. It belonged to all of K-pop. It opened a door that had never been opened before.

“On the Street” With J. Cole (2023)

In early 2023, J-Hope teamed with one of his major influences, J. Cole, for the single “On the Street.”

On March 22, 2023, “on the street (with J. Cole)” rose to the top of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and Rap Digital Song Sales charts.

Furthermore, in February 2023, Louis Vuitton revealed that they had selected J-Hope as their new global brand ambassador. This confirmed his arrival not just as a music icon but as a global fashion force.

Hope on the Street Vol. 1 and Documentary (2024)

In 2024, he issued the street dance docuseries Hope on the Street, accompanied by a six-track special album (Hope on the Street, Vol. 1) featuring collaborations with Jung Kook, Nile Rodgers, and Huh Yunjin.

On April 7, 2024, HOPE ON THE STREET VOL. 1 debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his highest-ranking solo album on the chart.

The docuseries was a love letter to street dance. It was a journey through different cities. Most importantly, it was a reconnection with the art form that started it all.

Hope on the Stage World Tour (2025)

With his Hope on the Stage World Tour, which kicked off in February 2025, J-Hope stepped onto the solo arena stage for the first time in his career.

The tour’s concept focused on duality: hope versus pressure, brightness versus fear, and public persona versus private self. Each set was carefully structured to reflect different chapters of his identity.

“Having performed at countless stadiums with BTS, I was always part of a seven-member team filling the stage. This time, I was on my own, and honestly, I wondered if I could handle that immense energy and pressure by myself. But I pulled it off, and that means a lot to me — it’s a milestone I’ll always cherish,” he told Billboard.

“LV Bag,” “Sweet Dreams,” and 2025 Collaborations

J-Hope teamed up with Don Toliver, Speedy, and Pharrell Williams for the 2025 single “LV Bag,” then worked with Miguel on the single “Sweet Dreams.”

Additionally, in May 2025, he released “Killin’ It Girl” featuring GloRilla. The track won Best Hip-Hop at the Korea Grand Music Awards in November 2025.

Lollapalooza Berlin 2025: Closing the Festival with 60,000 Fans

On July 13, 2025, BTS’ J-Hope led the closing evening of Lollapalooza Berlin with a solo 90-minute performance at Olympiastadion. He delivered 21 tracks, closing the festival’s run. Around 60,000 fans attended his show, with many holding official BTS lightsticks.

J-Hope also headlined Lollapalooza in Berlin in 2025. Seeing J-Hope shirtless and performing “Killin’ It Girl” was the highlight for ARMYs worldwide.

At the end of the performance, he made a deeply meaningful announcement. “After this, I’m going to start focusing on music for my team. I told the staff to just enjoy this, to put an amazing end. You’ve made it come true for me,” he told the crowd.

Military Service: Serving With Honour (2023–2024)

J-Hope enlisted on April 18, 2023, serving as an Assistant Instructor — a role assigned to soldiers demonstrating leadership and discipline.

J-Hope was discharged from military service at the army’s 36th Infantry Division on October 17, 2024, in Wonju, Gangwon-do province, South Korea. “Thanks to the fans, I was able to finish safely, with good health,” J-Hope told an audience of fans and reporters at the military base.

He was the second BTS member to complete his service, following Jin, who returned in June 2024. Jin presented J-Hope with a bouquet as he exited the base. Fans around the world described the moment as “Sun and Moon reunited.”

BTS Reunion: The Group Returns (2025)

All seven members of BTS have officially completed their mandatory military service. In just one week, RM, V, Jung Kook, and Jimin completed their mandatory South Korean military service, with Suga exiting shortly after on June 21, 2025.

The world waited. And the world was rewarded. BTS — complete, reunited, and stronger than ever — returned to the stage in 2025. J-Hope had already blazed the solo trail. Now he was ready to come home.

Philanthropy: Giving With Purpose

J-Hope’s generosity is as much a part of his identity as his talent.

On January 2, 2025, J-Hope made a 100 million won donation through the Hope Bridge Natural Disaster Relief Association to support families of the Jeju Air crash victims.

This act of compassion was not a one-off gesture. Throughout his career, J-Hope has consistently used his platform and resources to give back. He embodies the very name he chose — a symbol of hope for millions of people worldwide.
