Who Is Min Yoongi?

Min Yoon-gi, known professionally by his stage names Suga and Agust D, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is one of the seven members of BTS — the most globally impactful music group of the 21st century.

Suga serves as the lead rapper and producer of BTS, managed by Big Hit Music, a subsidiary of HYBE. Furthermore, as a solo artist under the name Agust D, he has created some of K-pop’s most critically praised and emotionally raw work — music that confronts depression, anxiety, ambition, and the price of fame without flinching.

As of 2025, he has 150–168 songs registered under KOMCA, placing him among the top-tier K-pop songwriters. He is, without question, one of the most important musical minds of his generation.

Early Life: Daegu, Hip-Hop, and a Dream His Parents Feared

Born in the Underground Capital of Korean Rap

Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea. He attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School.

Daegu, although one of the smaller notable cities in Korea, had a thriving underground music scene. Its early years would later produce powerhouses in the Korean music world such as Suga, Key of SHINee, S.Coups of SEVENTEEN, and Joohoney of MONSTA X.

Yoongi was the younger of two sons. He was born and raised with his older brother Min Junki.

The Song That Changed Everything

He became interested in rap after hearing “Ragga Muffin” by Stony Skunk, stating that it was different from anything he had ever heard before. After hearing Epik High, he decided to become a rapper.

By age 13, he began to write music lyrics and learned about MIDI. He worked a part-time job at a record studio by age 17. From then on, he began composing, arranging music, rapping, and performing.

These were not the habits of a hobbyist. They were the discipline of someone who knew exactly where he was going.

Gloss, D-Town, and Underground Credibility

Working under the name Gloss — the rough translation of Yoongi in English — he became a member of the rap collective D-Town.

As part of the hip hop crew D-Town in 2010, he produced “518-062,” a song commemorating the Gwangju Uprising — a democracy movement in Korea. He used music to express himself.

This was not commercially motivated work. It was artistically and politically conscious. Even as a teenager, Yoongi was making music with purpose.

Hardship: Food Delivery, a Shoulder Injury, and Parental Doubt

The road to Big Hit Entertainment was not easy.

Suga got a part-time job at Big Hit Entertainment in 2010, where he worked as a delivery man to pay his tuition fees. When Suga started working part-time for Big Hit Entertainment, he got into an accident and damaged his shoulders badly. This injury would follow him for years — ultimately affecting his military service more than a decade later.

At the beginning of Suga’s career, his parents did not support his interest in becoming a rapper. But his parents made peace with his choices and fully support his decision now.

The Big Hit Audition (2010)

There were three categories for the auditions by Big Hit Entertainment: rap, dance, and composition. Yoongi took auditions in both rap and composition. He proudly passed the first national audition for HIT IT in the summer of 2010, during his second year of high school. He then transferred to Apgujeong High School and moved to Seoul.

In the early days of joining the company, he dreamed of becoming a rapper while focusing on production rather than becoming an idol. Bang Si-hyuk eventually persuaded him to become a member of BTS, assuring him that he would only need to rap without choreography.

Stage Names: The Stories Behind “Suga” and “Agust D”

Two names. Two identities. One artist.

The stage name Suga was chosen by Bang Si-hyuk, founder of Big Hit Entertainment. It comes from the first syllables of “Shooting Guard,” the position Yoongi played in basketball during his youth.

“Agust D” is a rearrangement of his stage name along with a nod to his hometown. “Agus” is Suga spelled backwards, while “DT” stands for Daegu Town — his hometown and his old underground rap group.

Therefore, every time he releases music as Agust D, he carries Daegu — his roots, his struggles, his identity — with him.

BTS Career: From Debut to Global Domination

BTS Debut (June 13, 2013)

On June 5, 2013, Yoongi was officially introduced as a member of BTS. Along with the other members, he officially debuted on June 13, 2013.

His debut single “No More Dream” showcased his deep, laid-back rap tone and socially critical lyrics, questioning societal expectations on youth. From his debut, he was positioned as one of BTS’s primary lyricists and producers, focusing heavily on rap-line tracks.

Producer Behind the Scenes: Genius Lab

Yoongi has never been just a performer. He is an architect of sound.

Yoongi, along with RM and J-Hope, has had a lot of participation in all BTS albums. He currently has 150 writing credits and 50+ producing credits. Suga writes and produces not only for BTS but for other artists as well. He has named his studio “Genius Lab.”

In 2018, he was the first BTS member promoted to full membership of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), owing to his substantial musical output and revenue from songwriting credits.

Notable Collaborations as Producer

Suga’s production fingerprints appear across Korean music far beyond BTS.

The Korea Music Copyright Association attributes over 100 songs to Suga as a songwriter and producer, including Suran’s “Wine,” which peaked at number two on the Gaon Music Chart and won Best Soul/R&B Track of the Year at the 2017 Melon Music Awards. Additionally, he contributed rap and writing to Halsey’s “SUGA’s Interlude” in 2019 and produced and co-wrote PSY’s “That That” in 2022, also appearing in the music video.

Solo Career: The Agust D Trilogy

Agust D Mixtape (August 15, 2016)

In 2016, he released his first solo mixtape, Agust D. It was released on SoundCloud as a free download. It stunned listeners.

The narrative trilogy of Agust D → D-2 → D-DAY forms a cohesive personal story arc, known for lyrical depth — personal confessions in “The Last” and “Amygdala,” social critique in “Haegeum” and “Strange,” and genre fusion blending Korean traditional instruments with modern trap and hip-hop.

“The Last” — a track from this mixtape — remains one of the most direct discussions of depression, OCD, and self-loathing ever recorded by a mainstream Korean artist.

D-2 Mixtape (May 22, 2020)

D-2 was released on May 22, 2020, through Big Hit Entertainment, along with the lead single “Daechwita.” The mixtape consists of ten tracks, with songs sung and rapped in both Korean and English.

Commercially, D-2 peaked at number 11 on the US Billboard 200, number seven on the UK Albums Chart, and number two on Australia’s ARIA Album Chart.

“Daechwita” became a cultural phenomenon. It blended traditional Korean court music with trap production in a way that had never been done before.

D-DAY — Official Solo Album (April 21, 2023)

He made his official solo debut with his first full-length album, D-DAY, on April 21, 2023.

On September 6, 2024, Agust D’s D-DAY surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. It became the first Korean hip-hop album in history to reach this milestone.

Suga became the first Korean rapper with multiple albums over 1 billion Spotify streams. He also became the only Korean male rapper to hit 1 billion Spotify streams in consecutive years — in 2023 and 2024.

The Agust D World Tour (2023)

The Agust D World Tour was an arena-scale tour, with 10,000–20,000 capacity per night. It was known for minimalistic stage design focusing on live band and Yoongi’s storytelling.

He wrapped up 25 shows in 10 cities worldwide. The tour was later captured in a concert film — SUGA: Agust D Tour D-Day the Movie — directed by Park Jun-soo.

Military Service: The Final Duty

Suga began his mandatory military service on September 22, 2023, serving as social service personnel due to his prior shoulder injury.

Unlike with his BTS bandmates, there was no public event planned to mark Suga’s discharge due to overcrowding concerns.

Big Hit Music confirmed: “We confirm that Suga effectively completed his alternative service on June 18 by using his remaining leave. His official discharge date is June 21.”

He was officially discharged on June 21, 2025, becoming the final BTS member to complete service.

BTS Comeback: ARIRANG (2026)

In mid-2025, once the last member had finished his service, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook relocated to Los Angeles, where they shared a house for two months — the first time the group had been in one place since 2019.

BTS made their long-awaited full-group return in March 2026 with the release of their fifth studio album ARIRANG on March 20, marking the end of a hiatus that began in 2022.

To mark the album drop, BTS performed at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul at a free concert titled “BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG,” which streamed live on Netflix. A documentary, BTS: THE RETURN, premiered March 27, 2026, on Netflix.

The album achieved 110 million Spotify streams on Day 1, sold 4.2 million copies in South Korea in its first week, and broke Apple Music’s record for most first-day streams for a pop group’s album.

Mental Health Advocacy: Breaking Silence, Saving Lives

One of Yoongi’s most enduring legacies is his radical honesty about mental health.

Throughout his career, Suga has built a reputation as one of music’s most thoughtful advocates for mental health awareness, openly discussing his own struggles in interviews, lyrics, and the documentary SUGA: Road to D-DAY.

His lyrics in “The Last” (2016) disclosed his struggles with social phobia, depression, and OCD with unflinching clarity. His solo albums deepened this conversation over the years. Because of this, millions of fans — especially young people — have credited his music with helping them seek help and feel less alone.

Fashion and Brand Ambassadorship

In January 2023, Suga was officially appointed as a global brand ambassador for Valentino, joining the maison’s group known as “DI.VA” — an acronym for Different Values — alongside figures like Lewis Hamilton. Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, described him as “a multifaceted artist” who uses his talent to express “energy and authenticity.”

Education

Suga graduated from Global Cyber University with a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment. After completing this, like the other members, he enrolled at Hanyang Cyber University for the Master of Business Administration programme in Advertising and Media.

He has also said that during lockdown he was taking courses in psychology so that he could help people who were going through difficulties.

Awards and Achievements

Suga has earned numerous awards and nominations throughout his career, both as a member of BTS and through his solo projects. His talent as a rapper, songwriter, and producer has earned him recognition from major music industry awards, cementing his place as one of the most influential artists in K-pop and Korean hip-hop.

In 2018, he received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit (5th class) from the South Korean government for contributions to national culture.

Additionally, Suga was crowned Best K-pop Rapper 2024 at the Shining Awards, winning with 610,000 fan votes — surpassing eleven other prominent K-pop rappers.

Personal Life: Private, Principled, and Always Producing

Yoongi keeps his personal life intensely private. He rarely discusses relationships. He lets his music speak instead.

Suga’s ultimate favorite Korean cuisine is kimchi stew. He said his parents like it when his hair is longer. He has mentioned in interviews that he fears failure and disappointing fans.

These small admissions reveal a man who remains deeply human beneath the global icon. He is someone who still carries Daegu — and all its hunger — with him everywhere.
