Taapsee Pannu
Who Is Taapsee Pannu?
Taapsee Pannu is one of Indian cinema’s most compelling and courageous actresses. Born Tapasee Pannu on 1 August 1987, she primarily works in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil films. She has received two Filmfare Awards and a Filmfare OTT Award. She has also earned a National Film Award for Best Actress.
Her path was not conventional. She started as a software engineer. She moved into modelling. She then built a film career, one powerful role at a time, without industry connections or a Bollywood family name to lean on.
She calls herself Hindi cinema’s dark horse. “No one really believes that I can do it or what I will end up doing,” she has said. Then she goes and does it anyway.
Early Life: Delhi Roots and a Jat-Sikh Heritage
A Family Forged by Resilience
Taapsee Pannu was born into a Jat-Sikh family. Her father is a retired real estate agent, and her mother is a homemaker. Her family lived in Shakti Nagar, Delhi. In 1984, they were targeted in the anti-Sikh riots but found refuge in a Hindu neighbour’s home.
That early lesson in courage and community stayed with her. It shows in every role she picks.
Her father’s name is Dilmohan Singh Pannu. She has a younger sister named Shagun Pannu, who is also an actress.
Schooling and Computer Engineering
She did her schooling at the Mata Jai Kaur Public School in Ashok Vihar, Delhi. After school, she pursued a technical degree. After completing her graduation in Computer Science Engineering from the Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology in New Delhi, she worked as a software engineer.
However, a career in IT was not her calling. Something bigger was waiting.
The Turning Point: Channel V and Femina Miss India
She auditioned for Channel V’s 2008 talent show Get Gorgeous and got selected. She started doing commercials. In 2008, she participated in Femina Miss India, where she got the titles of “Fresh Face” and “Miss Beautiful Skin.”
She appeared in numerous print and television commercials and won several titles during her modelling days. These wins opened the door to acting. She walked through it and never looked back.
Acting Career: From Telugu Debut to National Acclaim
The Beginning: Telugu and Tamil Cinema (2010–2013)
Taapsee Pannu made her acting debut with the 2010 Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam, playing Sravya — an NRI girl from a wealthy family navigating cultural clashes in a romantic musical.
The film was well-received. She received three more offers in Telugu before Jhummandi Naadam even released. Therefore, South Indian cinema became her training ground. She worked across Telugu and Tamil productions, building craft, confidence, and credits.
Bollywood Entry and Early Recognition (2013–2015)
Taapsee entered Bollywood with supporting roles before landing films that showcased her real potential. In Baby (2015), she delivered a powerful performance that began drawing wider attention. Her ability to handle action, emotion, and complex moral situations in one role made directors take notice.
The Game-Changer: Pink (2016)
Pink changed everything.
For portraying the septuagenarian sharpshooter Prakashi Tomar in the biopic Saand Ki Aankh (2019), she won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. But it was Pink (2016) that first elevated her to the conversation about India’s finest screen talent. The courtroom drama, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, tackled consent, victim-blaming, and the justice system with unflinching honesty. Taapsee’s performance as Meenal Arora was tightly controlled and devastating.
Pink received a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It remains her highest-rated film to this day.
A Defining Run: 2018–2021
Between 2018 and 2021, Taapsee delivered some of the finest performances of her generation:
- Mulk (2018) — A Muslim family fighting to reclaim their honour after a son is accused of terrorism. Taapsee played lawyer Aarti Mohammed, reuniting with director Anubhav Sinha.
- Manmarziyaan (2018) — A complex love triangle directed by Anurag Kashyap, showcasing a completely different emotional register.
- Saand Ki Aankh (2019) — A dual biopic about elderly female sharpshooters. She won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.
- Badla (2019) — A tight psychological thriller with Amitabh Bachchan.
- Thappad (2020) — Her most celebrated performance. A woman decides to end her marriage after her husband slaps her in public and refuses to minimise it. The film sparked a national conversation. For playing a homemaker going through a divorce in the social drama Thappad (2020), she won the Filmfare Award. apple
- Rashmi Rocket (2021) — She plays a female sprinter who fights a gender testing controversy. The role earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She underwent intense physical training to portray an elite athlete convincingly.
The OTT Era and Box Office Peak (2021–2023)
Taapsee embraced streaming platforms without hesitation. She starred in the streaming films Haseen Dillruba (2021) and its sequel Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024), and Looop Lapeta (2022).
She also delivered her biggest box office hit. After a series of underperforming films, she achieved her highest-grossing release with the comedy-drama Dunki (2023), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-starring Shah Rukh Khan. The film earned widespread praise and global reach.
2024–2026: A New Chapter
Taapsee has continued to push into new territory:
- Khel Khel Mein (2024) — A comedy-drama released on Independence Day.
- Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024) — The successful Netflix sequel to her 2021 thriller hit.
- Assi (2026) — Released in cinemas on February 20, 2026, marking Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha’s third collaboration after Mulk and Thappad. The film is a socially charged legal drama rooted in the realities of sexual violence and institutional failure, with Pannu headlining the narrative as the prosecution’s emotional and ethical anchor. The film earned a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics hailed her performance as one of 2026’s best.
- Gandhari (2026) — The film premiered on Netflix on 3 September 2026. Gandhari has emerged as one of the most successful Indian film performances on Netflix in 2026. Taapsee plays a visually impaired mother who goes to any length to save her daughter. She prepared extensively for the role’s action demands and emotional complexity.
Business Ventures: The Entrepreneur Behind the Actress
Outsiders Films — Production House
Taapsee launched her production house, Outsiders Films, alongside producer Pranjal Khandhdiya. “Pranjal and I both come from humble backgrounds. That’s when the name Outsiders Films clicked with us.”
The company produces films in the same mould as her acting career — issue-driven, female-led, socially relevant. She has said she will only greenlight a film she would genuinely want to watch as an audience member.
The Wedding Factory — Event Management
Apart from acting, Pannu runs an event management company called The Wedding Factory. The company handles premium weddings and lifestyle events, extending her brand beyond the screen.
Pune 7 Aces — Badminton Franchise
She is also the owner of the badminton franchise Pune 7 Aces, which plays in the Premier Badminton League. This venture connects directly to her personal life, given her husband’s background in professional badminton.
Personal Life: A Private Love Story Made Public
Marriage to Mathias Boe
Actress Taapsee Pannu got married to her longtime boyfriend, Danish badminton player Mathias Boe, in Udaipur on March 23, 2024, after dating for more than 10 years.
She had a court marriage with Mathias in December 2023. The traditional wedding ceremony took place on March 23, 2024. The ceremony blended Sikh and Christian rituals, reflecting both their backgrounds.
Taapsee kept the wedding deliberately private. “My personal life is personal, and my professional life is strictly professional,” she has said. Furthermore, she explained that excessive exposure to personal life can negatively impact both spheres. Even when wedding videos were leaked online, she remained composed. “Those leaks only validated my belief that I should keep my personal life private,” she said.
A Decade-Long Love
Taapsee and Mathias were secretly engaged for nine years before they tied the knot. She later spoke about one important sacrifice she made during those years to support his badminton career. This decade-long patience — private, unannounced, and deeply personal — reflects exactly who she is: someone who does things on her own terms.
Public Persona: Outspoken, Unafraid, Unapologetic
Taapsee has always been willing to speak her mind. She supported the farmers’ protests in India. She pushed back against critics who dismissed her work. She faced IT raids in 2021 with characteristic bluntness. After the raids, Pannu cheekily tweeted: “I am not sasti anymore.” Pannu often uses sarcasm and wit to combat diatribes.
She has also appeared consistently on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list since 2018 — a recognition not just of her fame, but of her economic and cultural impact.
She describes herself as a dark horse. “At times, I feel bad that I have to prove myself so many times. But I am happy being the dark horse. It is also quite an achievement,” she has said.
