Who Is Wade Barrett?

Stuart Alexander Bennett, known professionally as Wade Barrett, is one of professional wrestling’s most versatile personalities. He is an English professional wrestling commentator, actor, and former professional wrestler and bare-knuckle boxer who holds both British and American citizenship.

His journey is unlike any other. He went from underground bare-knuckle fights across Europe to headlining WWE pay-per-view events. Then he went from the wrestling ring to the acting screen. Today, he sits at the commentary desk—and he is very good at it.

He is the co-commentator for WWE Friday Night SmackDown on USA Network in the United States and Netflix in all other international markets. He also commentates on some of WWE’s biggest global pay-per-view events, including the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

Early Life: Lancashire Roots and a Life of Grit

Born in Penwortham, Lancashire

Stuart Bennett grew up in Penwortham, a quiet town in Lancashire, England born on August 10, 1980. He is a proud Preston North End football fan—a detail his commentary colleagues know well.

He earned a degree in marine biology from the University of Liverpool, after which he went to work in a science lab and as a recruitment consultant while training to become a wrestler.

This background is surprising. However, it shows the range of a man who never settled for an obvious path.

Bare-Knuckle Boxing Career: Fighting Across Europe

Before professional wrestling, there was something far rawer.

While living in Liverpool in his early 20s, Bennett became a champion bare-knuckle boxer who would fight in various locations throughout Europe.

The attack left him with a 12-inch scar that stretches from his upper back to halfway down his right arm, and the punches he took during his bare-knuckle career left him with a disfigured nose, but he has expressed no regret over that period of his life.

One of his most notable bouts took place in Budapest—a fight now referred to as “The Battle of Buda.” These experiences were raw. They were dangerous. But they shaped the physical and mental toughness that would define his wrestling persona for years to come.

He incorporated his bare-knuckle career into his WWE gimmick at the request of Dusty Rhodes, being introduced to the WWE audience as a bare-knuckle champion who had fought on the streets of Europe. His Wasteland move is named after the site of many of his fights.

Professional Wrestling Career: The Rise of a Villain

Early Career on the British Independent Scene (2004–2006)

Bennett decided to become a professional wrestler at the age of 21 and was trained by Jon Ritchie and Al Snow. He made his professional wrestling debut in June 2004, using the ring name Stu Sanders, as a surprise entrant in a 30-man battle royal held by NWA UK Hammerlock Wrestling.

He built his reputation steadily. Therefore, by the time WWE came calling, he was ready.

WWE Developmental: OVW and FCW (2006–2010)

Bennett started tryouts with the WWE in 2006, signing a developmental contract in 2007. He was first assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) before moving to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in 2008.

During his time in FCW, he wrestled under the name Lawrence Knight. Following an injury that required surgery, he briefly moved into commentary alongside Dusty Rhodes. In August 2009, he was renamed Wade Barrett—partially in honor of the England rugby union player, Wade Dooley.

He returned to in-ring competition in FCW in December 2009. Furthermore, he never looked back.

The Nexus: A Debut That Shocked the World (2010)

In 2010, Stu was signed to the WWE and became a huge part of the brand.

Under the Wade Barrett name, Bennett won the first season of NXT in 2010 and made his main roster debut on Raw later that year. He rose to prominence as the leader of The Nexus, a villainous faction composed of the remaining NXT first-season rookies. He headlined five PPV events for WWE in 2010—SummerSlam, Night of Champions, Bragging Rights, Survivor Series, and TLC—three of which saw him unsuccessfully challenge for the WWE Championship.

The Nexus debut was voted Shocker of the Year and Feud of the Year for 2010. Barrett was also named Most Hated Wrestler of the Year as part of The Nexus. These were not just accolades. They were proof that the wrestling world was paying close attention.

The Corre and First Intercontinental Championship (2011)

He later formed The Corre, a short-lived group with former Nexus members Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel, along with Ezekiel Jackson in 2011.

During this run, Barrett captured his first Intercontinental Championship—defeating Kofi Kingston in March 2011. This was the beginning of an Intercontinental Championship dynasty.

Bad News Barrett: A Character for the Ages (2013–2015)

In 2013, Barrett’s ring name was changed to Bad News Barrett, and he adopted the character of a man who took pleasure in breaking bad news to other people.

The character resonated instantly with audiences. His catchphrases became internet sensations. His Bad News podium segments became required viewing. Moreover, his in-ring work remained sharp throughout.

King of the Ring: 2015 Tournament Winner

In 2015, he won the 20th King of the Ring tournament, at which point his ring name was changed to King Barrett.

He defeated Dolph Ziggler in the first round on his way to tournament glory. This victory added another layer to his already rich character history.

Five-Time Intercontinental Champion

He is a 5-time Intercontinental Champion. This achievement places him among the most decorated Intercontinental Champions in WWE history. Each reign told a different story. Each reign reinforced his status as one of the company’s most reliable and charismatic performers.

Departure From WWE (2016)

He has not wrestled since leaving WWE in May 2016. WWE released Bennett early when he decided not to sign a new contract with the company.

He notably portrayed a villain for his entire WWE career, regardless of the other changes to his character. This consistency of character is rare in professional wrestling. It is also one of the most respected aspects of his legacy. Post-WWE Work: Acting, Commentary, and Global Wrestling

Acting Career: From the Ring to the Screen

Bennett made his acting debut in the action film Dead Man Down (2013) and has since starred in action films such as Eliminators (2016), I Am Vengeance (2018), and I Am Vengeance: Retaliation (2020).

His imposing frame and natural charisma translate well to the action genre. His film career proved that his talents extended far beyond the wrestling ring.

World of Sport Wrestling and Defiant Wrestling (2018–2019)

He has appeared in non-wrestling roles on the international independent circuit, such as a commentator for World of Sport Wrestling and a general manager for Defiant Wrestling under his real name.

He also hosted Ultimate Beastmaster for Netflix during this period, further expanding his media presence.

NWA Powerr Commentary (2019)

In December 2019, he was named color commentator for NWA Powerrr, adding another prestigious commentary role to his growing résumé.

WWE Return: The Voice Behind the Action (2020–Present)

Return to WWE as NXT Commentator (August 2020)

He returned to WWE as a commentator in August 2020. His return was welcomed enthusiastically by fans. Moreover, his expertise as a former performer gave his commentary an authenticity that few analysts can match.

After retiring from in-ring action, Stu took over commentary duties for the hugely popular spin-off show NXT in 2020.

Moving to the Main Roster: Raw and SmackDown (2024–2025)

In 2024, Stu became the co-commentator for WWE’s flagship brand, Monday Night RAW (USA Network & TNT Sports), and moved to Friday Night SmackDown in January 2025.

WWE officially announced the hiring of Joe Tessitore and confirmed that he would be part of a commentary team with Corey Graves and Wade Barrett. Tessitore himself noted, “Corey and Wade are absolute stars, and it is my privilege to join their team.”

The SmackDown Commentary Team: Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett

For most of 2025, the SmackDown commentary team was Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett.

Their dynamic has been a highlight of the product. Barrett’s wit, wrestling knowledge, and natural heel instincts make him one of the best color commentators in the business today.

Brief Absence and Return (September 2025)

In September 2025, reports surfaced of Barrett being removed from WWE commentary. However, Barrett addressed this directly and clearly.

Barrett took to social media to clarify: “I usually ignore BS reports like this, but it’s causing needless hate to be spewed towards people I work with. WWE has kindly given me a couple of weeks off for personal time (booked nine months ago), and then I’m back to business as usual. A complete non-story. The end.”

True to his word, he returned to the commentary desk in short order.

WrestleMania 42, Clash in Italy, and Beyond (2026)

In 2026, Barrett has appeared at WWE Royal Rumble, WWE Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania 42, WWE Backlash Tampa, and WWE Clash in Italy.

He continues to be one of the most consistent and entertaining voices across WWE’s biggest stages. Furthermore, his presence at premium live events adds significant credibility to each broadcast.
