Who Is Ninja?

Richard Tyler Blevins, widely known by his gaming alias Ninja, stands as one of the most recognizable figures in the streaming world. He is bold. He is electric. He is the man who made the world watch video games.

Ninja holds the Guinness World Record for being the most-followed user on Twitch, with over 19.2 million followers. He was also included in Time magazine’s World’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2018.

Furthermore, Forbes has ranked Ninja among the world’s highest-paid creators on three separate occasions. The first was in 2019, when he was the highest-paid video gamer in the world, earning an estimated $17 million that year.

Early Life: A Detroit Kid Who Fell in Love With Video Games

Born to Play

Richard Tyler Blevins was born on June 5, 1991, in Taylor, Michigan. He moved with his family to the Chicago suburbs as an infant.

He grew up with his mother, Cynthia, his father, Chuck, and older brothers, John and Chris. His parents are both of Welsh descent. Chuck introduced Tyler to video games at a young age.

His brother John once shared that he remembered little Tyler asking him to let him play computer games, since he enjoyed watching his elder brothers playing. Gaming was not just a hobby in the Blevins household. It was a language.

School, Soccer, and Side Jobs

Tyler attended Grayslake Central High School, where he played soccer. While attending high school, Blevins also worked at Noodles & Company.

However, his real passion was always in front of a screen. By the time he was in high school, he was already competing in video game tournaments. He was determined. He was focused. He was preparing for a career the world had not yet recognized as one.

Esports Career: From Halo to the Hall of Fame

Breaking Into Competitive Gaming (2009–2016)

Ninja began his professional gaming career in 2009 with Halo 3 and continued competing through the release of Halo 5, staying active in the competitive scene for nearly seven years.

He played under major organizations like Cloud9, Team Liquid, and Renegades, and even clinched the MLG Fall Championship title in 2012.

Additionally, in 2011, he started streaming H1Z1 before moving to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and joining Luminosity Gaming as their first Halo player.

These were the years of grinding. These were the years of building. Most importantly, these were the years that sharpened Tyler into a champion.

The PUBG Era and Growing Recognition (2017)

He moved to PUBG and went on to win the PUBG Gamescom Invitational Squads classification in August 2017.

Ninja was growing fast. Therefore, when a new game launched in late 2017, he was perfectly positioned to take the world by storm.

The Fortnite Era: When the World Started Watching

Fortnite Changes Everything (Late 2017)

His big break came when he began streaming Fortnite Battle Royale shortly after its official release in 2017.

His colorful commentary, unparalleled gaming skills, and engaging personality made him the go-to streamer for millions wanting to see high-level Fortnite gameplay.

At the time, he was earning over $500,000 per month from streaming Fortnite alone. He credits the game’s free-to-play business model as a growth factor.

The Record-Breaking Drake Stream (March 2018)

Then came the moment that made history.

When he played Fortnite with Drake, Travis Scott, and JuJu Smith-Schuster in March 2018, 635,000 people watched the live stream simultaneously — setting a record for the largest concurrent audience on an individual Twitch stream.

This stream broke records on Twitch with 635,000 concurrent viewers tuning in. It brought mainstream media attention to gaming and streaming unlike anything before it.

The gaming world had never seen anything like it. Furthermore, neither had the entertainment industry.

ESPN Magazine Cover: A First for Esports (September 2018)

September 2018 was a milestone moment for Blevins. He became the first esports professional to grace the cover of ESPN The Magazine — signifying his leap into mainstream sports recognition.

In June 2018, Ninja also signed a partnership with Red Bull Esports. His status as the face of modern gaming was now cemented in print, on screens, and in living rooms around the world.

The Mixer Move and Microsoft Deal (2019–2020)

Leaving Twitch for Mixer

On August 1, 2019, Blevins announced that he was leaving Twitch and switching to the Microsoft-owned platform Mixer. At the time, Ninja was Twitch’s most-followed active channel.

His wife and manager Jessica told The Verge that the contract with Twitch had limited his ability to grow his brand outside of video gaming. She added that “it really seemed like he was kind of losing himself and his love for streaming.”

The $40 Million Microsoft Deal

The move came with an enormous financial reward. Between the buyout and the money he earned during the single year of the Mixer deal, Ninja is believed to have earned $40 million from Microsoft.

Returning Home to Twitch (September 2020)

Due to the shutdown of Mixer in July 2020, Blevins was released from his exclusivity deal, enabling him to stream on other platforms. On September 10, 2020, Blevins revealed that he would return to Twitch.

He came back stronger. He came back wiser. Moreover, his audience welcomed him home.

Beyond Gaming: Books, Hollywood, and TV

Get Good — The Book (2019)

In 2019, Ninja authored Get Good: My Ultimate Guide to Gaming. The book gave fans an inside look at the mindset and strategies behind elite-level gaming. It became a bestseller and proved Ninja’s reach extended far beyond a screen.

Free Guy (2021) and Hollywood Cameos

He starred in Free Guy in 2021. The Ryan Reynolds film about a video game character gaining self-awareness was a natural fit for the world’s most famous gamer. Additionally, he has appeared on talk shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The Masked Singer (2019)

In 2019, Blevins appeared on the Fox reality singing competition The Masked Singer, revealing yet another entertaining side to his larger-than-life personality.

The 2024 Cancer Battle: Courage Beyond the Screen

The Melanoma Diagnosis

In early 2024, Ninja faced his biggest challenge. It had nothing to do with gaming.

In a post on X on March 26, 2024, Tyler got personal and shared a health update, disclosing a melanoma diagnosis.

He said: “I’m still in a bit of shock… a few weeks ago I went in to a dermatologist for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me. There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful. It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages.”

He used his platform for good, saying: “I’m grateful to have hope in finding this early, but please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.”

Declared Cancer-Free

The news that followed brought relief to millions.

Just over a month after sharing the news about his diagnosis, Tyler confirmed that he is completely clear of melanoma and recovering well from his surgeries.

Blevins wrote: “Just got the news from my dermatologist. Great news x 2! Excision was successful with clear margins. Lesion biopsied nearby showed only mild atypia and was entirely removed with the biopsy.”

Turning Diagnosis Into Advocacy (September 2025)

Ninja refused to let his experience go to waste. In September 2025, he hosted a 24-hour Gaming for Cause charity livestream for melanoma awareness, partnering with skincare brand La Roche-Posay. The event featured top content creators playing Fortnite and Marvel Rivals, while educating audiences on melanoma and the importance of early detection.

He received a second melanoma diagnosis on his thigh. He said: “I’ve always stared at this mole on my right thigh… I gotta keep an eye on this one.” Ninja turned personal pain into public good. That, ultimately, is true influence.

Charity: The Michigan Stadium Stream (September 2024)

Ninja and his brother Jonathan, known as BeardedBlevins, raised $93,125 for the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center in September 2024. The brothers played Fortnite live from Michigan Stadium for more than five hours, attracting thousands of viewers and 650 donations.

Brand Deals and Business Empire

Ninja built more than a following. He built a financial empire.

His income was bolstered through endorsement deals with companies such as Adidas, Red Bull, and PSD.

In recent years, Ninja has capitalized on his popularity by branching into entrepreneurship. His official website, teamninja.com, serves as a central hub for merchandise, updates, and community engagement.

His signature blue hair has become an iconic part of his personal brand. Furthermore, he has an official Fortnite icon skin and multiple in-game collaborations with Epic Games, cementing his legacy directly within the game that made him famous.

Personal Life: The Woman Behind the Legend

Jessica Blevins — Wife and Manager

Tyler met fellow gamer Jessica Goch at a Halo tournament in 2010. They began a relationship in 2013. The couple married in August 2017 and honeymooned in the Caribbean.

Jessica is not only his wife but also served as his manager, helping to build and manage his brand.

When Jessica first started managing Tyler’s career, she was mostly pitching him to potential sponsors. Her business instincts and fierce dedication turned Ninja from a streamer into a global brand. Behind every great gaming legend, there is often an equally great partner.

Family and Heritage

Tyler is of English, German, Scots-Irish, and Welsh descent. He remains close to his brothers, Chris and John. His collaboration with his brother Jonathan in charity gaming events reflects the close-knit family values that have always grounded him.
