Who Is Ilia Topuria?
Ilia Topuria is a renowned Georgian-Spanish professional mixed martial artist, UFC fighter, and former UFC Lightweight Champion, known as “El Matador” for his undefeated record, elite striking, grappling, and knockout power. He is the former UFC Featherweight Champion, becoming the first fighter of Georgian and Spanish descent to win a UFC title, and ranks among the top pound-for-pound fighters.
He has beaten three former world champions by knockout in his last three fights. He has won titles at featherweight and lightweight without ever tasting defeat — until June 2026.
No fighter in UFC history had become a two-division champion while remaining undefeated — until Topuria did it.
Early Life: A Family of Refugees, Three Countries, One Dream
Born in Germany, Rooted in Georgia
Ilia Topuria was born on January 21, 1997, in Halle Westfalen, Germany. He was brought up by his parents — Georgian refugees from Abkhazia — in a family facing relocations due to conflict.
His family has roots in Abkhazia, a region from which they were displaced. After leaving Abkhazia, they moved to Germany, where Ilia was born in 1997.
His parents’ names are Zaza and Inga Topuria. Their sacrifices across three countries built the foundation of everything Ilia would become.
The Move to Georgia and Early Wrestling
At age seven, the family moved to Georgia, where he began practicing Greco-Roman wrestling at school alongside his older brother Aleksandre Topuria.
Before that reunion, Ilia and his older brother Aleksandre spent several years in Georgia while their parents worked to build a more stable life abroad.
These early years shaped him. They built his discipline. Most importantly, they built his resilience.
A Mother Who Changed Everything
The story of how Ilia found MMA is unforgettable.
His mother played a direct role in opening the door to MMA. In Spain, she once noticed a man with a cauliflower ear on a bus. She recognized it as a sign of combat sports and approached him about training her sons. The man turned out to be connected to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and invited them to the Climent Club gym.
His father also supported the idea from the beginning. With his own background in wrestling, he understood the value of combat sports and encouraged his sons to take the path seriously.
Moving to Spain at 15: A New Home, a New Identity
Following the Russo-Georgian War, at age 15, they relocated to Alicante, Spain. There, he trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Climent Club Gym before transitioning to mixed martial arts.
Spain became far more than a training destination. He learned the language and built his career there. In 2024, the Council of Ministers gave him Spanish citizenship, recognizing that he had represented the country long before he was officially a citizen. Now, he holds both Georgian and Spanish nationalities.
He has never tidied the contradiction into something simple: “You cut me and my blood is Georgian,” he has said, “but my heart is Spanish.”
Fighting Style: The Complete Martial Artist
Ilia Topuria is dangerous in every area of MMA. However, his combination of skills is what truly sets him apart.
Topuria goes into every fight as a complete mixed martial artist. He is dangerous when striking, skilled on the ground, and has a finishing instinct that sets him apart from almost anyone else in the sport.
Elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
His UFC debut was in 2020, and he won all eight of his fights before earning a featherweight title shot.
In 2018, he and his brother Aleksandre made history by becoming the first Georgians to earn black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In May 2018, at age 21, he earned that black belt from the Climent brothers, recognizing his technical mastery and competitive application. Topuria actively competed in Spanish and European jiu-jitsu tournaments during his early years in Spain, using these events to refine his submission arsenal.
Devastating Boxing
Topuria’s striking has improved enormously since he joined the UFC. His boxing is precise, explosive, and final. Opponents who have underestimated his hands have paid heavily for that mistake.
His nickname “El Matador” is a reflection of his reputation for skill and precision in the Octagon. Over time, the name became a symbol of both his Spanish identity and Georgian roots.
Professional Career: From Spanish Gyms to UFC Greatness
Early Career: Building an Unbeaten Record (2015–2019)
Ilia Topuria made his professional MMA debut at the age of 18 in April 2015. He quickly made a name for himself on the Spanish regional circuit, amassing a series of victories, many of which came by way of submission.
He also competed for the Cage Warriors Bantamweight Championship. Although he won the fight, he was ineligible to claim the title after missing weight. Before joining the UFC, Topuria also had a successful stint in the Brave Combat Federation.
UFC Debut and Rise (2020–2023)
Topuria signed with the UFC in 2020 and made his promotional debut on short notice against Youssef Zalal — a fight he won by unanimous decision.
From there, he steamrolled through the featherweight division. His key victories in this period included:
- Youssef Zalal — Unanimous decision (October 2020)
- Damon Jackson — KO, Round 1 (December 2020)
- Ryan Hall — KO, Round 1 (July 2021)
- Jai Herbert — KO, Round 2 (March 2022)
- Bryce Mitchell — Submission, arm-triangle choke, Round 2 (December 2022)
- Josh Emmett — Unanimous decision, 5 rounds (June 2023) — Fight of the Night
His win against Emmett in June 2023 earned him “Fight of the Night” honors. Furthermore, it earned him the biggest opportunity of his career — a featherweight title shot.
UFC 298 — Featherweight Championship: The Knockout Heard Around the World (February 2024)
This was the night the MMA world changed.
He stunned the MMA world at UFC 298 in February 2024 by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski in the second round to claim featherweight gold.
Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski at 3:32 of the second round to win the UFC featherweight title. Volkanovski was considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Topuria silenced every doubt in one punch.
This victory made him the first Georgian and Spanish athlete to win a UFC title.
UFC 308 — Title Defense Against Max Holloway (October 2024)
The doubters wanted to see it again. Topuria answered them emphatically.
He defended the belt by finishing Max Holloway in the third round at UFC 308 in October 2024.
He knocked out Max Holloway at 1:34 of Round 3. Holloway — one of the most durable strikers the featherweight division has ever seen — had no answer for Topuria’s timing and power. Two divisional greats. Two finishes. No arguments left.
Vacating the Featherweight Belt (February 2025)
Topuria vacated the featherweight title in February 2025 to pursue lightweight gold.
Most champions would have settled in and milked the 145-pound title for years. Topuria chose legacy over comfort. He chose history over safety.
UFC 317 — Lightweight Championship: Making History (June 2025)
He won the vacant 155-pound belt stunningly at UFC 317 in June 2025, knocking out Charles Oliveira in round one to become the first undefeated two-division champion in UFC history.
At UFC 317 in June 2025, Topuria fought Charles Oliveira for the vacant Lightweight crown. Oliveira holds the record for the most finishes in UFC history. It did not matter. Topuria walked him down and finished him in the first round — his fastest knockout to date.
The achievement was staggering. He became the tenth fighter in UFC history to claim titles in two weight classes. Remarkably, Topuria achieved this while maintaining an undefeated professional record.
UFC Freedom 250 — The White House Loss (June 2026)
Topuria defended the undisputed lightweight title against interim champion Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, 2026, at the White House South Lawn in Washington, D.C.
Justin Gaethje achieved his lifelong dream on the South Lawn of the White House, earning a fourth-round stoppage win over Ilia Topuria to claim the undisputed lightweight title when Topuria declined to continue.
The doctor checked on Topuria before the fourth round, and he was allowed to continue. But when he returned to his corner following that round, the bout was halted.
Gaethje’s power piled on punch after punch, damaging Topuria and leading to Topuria being unable to continue into the final round. It was a historic night — one of the biggest upsets in recent UFC history.
Despite this defeat, his journey from a gym in Alicante to two UFC championships, undefeated across three countries, is unlike anything the sport had ever seen before.

Ilia is not the only fighter in the family. His older brother, Aleksandre Topuria, is also a professional mixed martial artist who made his UFC debut in February 2025.
Aleksandre Topuria, nicknamed “El Conquistador,” was born on January 28, 1996, in Halle, Germany. He fights at bantamweight and trains out of the Topuria Team in Alicante, Spain. Together, the Topuria brothers represent one of the most exciting fighting families in modern MMA.
Children
Ilia Topuria has a son, Hugo Topuria, born in 2019, and a daughter, Gio, born around 2023. While his daughter remains mostly out of the public spotlight, Topuria’s bond with his son is frequently shared on social media. From photoshoots to sparring sessions, Hugo can be seen spending time with his father.
Ex-Wife: Giorgina Uzcategui Badell
Giorgina Uzcategui Badell was born in Spain but lived in Miami, where she attended college and built her entrepreneurial career. It was in Miami that she met Ilia Topuria for the first time. They met over dinner, exchanged hearts, and one thing led to another.
Late in 2025, he stepped away from the sport for a spell, telling fans he needed to handle a difficult period in his personal life and wanted to focus on his children.
Faith and Values
He is a person of strong Christian faith. His Georgian heritage, Christian values, and multicultural upbringing form the spiritual backbone of his identity — both inside and outside the Octagon.
New Training Team (2025)
Heading into 2025, he split from Jorge and Agustín Climent — the coaches who had raised him from a raw teenager into a two-time champion. There was no feud. The revamped Topuria Team leaned on his inner circle, with brother Aleksandre alongside him, striking coach Javi Climent, and a pair of decorated jiu-jitsu black belts handling the grappling.
Sponsorships and Business
Topuria has sponsorship agreements with several brands, including Venum, Oblack Caps, and Keio Mobile. He also has business ventures outside of fighting. His official website is iliatopuriaoficial.com.
