Who Is Eminem?
Eminem is a global icon. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, he rose from a turbulent childhood marked by poverty, instability, and pain to become the most commercially successful rapper in history.
He has sold over 220 million records worldwide. He has won 15 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. He has released 12 studio albums — all of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Moreover, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. He is a father. He is now a grandfather. He is, without question, one of the greatest artists of his generation.
Early Life: Poverty, Detroit, and Hip-Hop as a Lifeline
A Turbulent Childhood Across Missouri and Michigan
Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri. His father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., abandoned the family early. Therefore, his mother, Debbie Nelson, raised him amid poverty and constant moves across the Midwest. By age 12, they had settled in Detroit, Michigan — a city that would shape him forever.
Life in Detroit was hard. He was bullied for his pale skin and his trailer-park roots. He struggled to fit in. However, it was in those same streets that he found hip-hop. The music saved him.
The Half-Uncle Who Changed Everything
Eminem first discovered hip-hop when his half-uncle Ronnie gave him a tape of Ice-T’s “Reckless.” That single moment redirected his life. Ronnie became his mentor — his closest friend and confidant. Tragically, Ronnie died by suicide in 1991, a loss that silenced Eminem for days and left a lasting mark on his music and his soul.
Dropping Out, Battling, and Refusing to Quit
Eminem dropped out of Lincoln High School in Detroit after repeating ninth grade three times. Despite this, he never stopped pushing. He began entering rap battle competitions across Detroit. He joined the group New Jacks in 1988 and later founded Soul Intent. He was determined. He was hungry. He refused to quit.
Career: From “Infinite” to a Rap Legend
Infinite and the Early Struggle (1996)
In 1996, Eminem released his debut album Infinite independently. It flopped commercially. Critics dismissed him. He nearly gave up on music entirely. However, that failure pushed him to evolve — to become sharper, bolder, and angrier.
Dr. Dre Discovers Slim Shady (1997–1999)
In 1997, Eminem released The Slim Shady EP. Interscope co-founder Jimmy Iovine heard it and passed it to legendary producer Dr. Dre. Dre was instantly captivated. He signed Eminem to Aftermath Entertainment immediately.
Together, they released The Slim Shady LP in February 1999. It was a blockbuster. It sold millions of copies. It introduced the world to Eminem’s darkly comedic alter ego and earned him two Grammy Awards.
The Marshall Mathers LP — A Record-Breaking Moment (2000)
In May 2000, Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP. It sold 1.78 million copies in its first week — the fastest-selling solo rap album in history at that time. It put the rapper into the dead center of early-2000s media and discourse.
The album featured iconic tracks like “Stan,” “The Real Slim Shady,” and “Kim.” It earned him two more Grammy Awards and cemented his status as the defining voice of his generation.
The Eminem Show and 8 Mile — The Commercial Peak (2002)
2002 was the year Eminem became a cultural phenomenon beyond music. The Eminem Show went platinum 27 times over. Then came the film 8 Mile, a semi-autobiographical drama set in Detroit. He starred in it. He wrote its anthem.
The song “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003 — making Eminem the first rap artist to win an Oscar for a song. The film itself grossed $242 million globally.
Encore, Addiction, and Recovery (2004–2009)
Fame came with a price. Eminem battled a severe addiction to prescription medication throughout the mid-2000s. In 2005, he nearly died from a methadone overdose.
He retreated. He struggled. He fought back.
By 2008, he was sober. He published his memoir, The Way I Am, the same year, including photos, drawings, and lyrics that gave fans a raw, unfiltered look inside his life. His comeback album Relapse arrived in 2009, signaling that the real Slim Shady was back.
The Comeback and Reinvention (2010–2020)
Eminem continued to reinvent himself with each release. Recovery (2010) became the best-selling album worldwide that year. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013) earned him the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Revival (2017) and Kamikaze (2018) followed. Then came Music to Be Murdered By (2020) — a project that demonstrated his still-evolving technical mastery.
Furthermore, he grew as a technical lyricist during this era. He experimented with new production approaches, faster flows, and increasingly complex multisyllabic wordplay.
The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) — #1 Again (2024)
In July 2024, Eminem released his 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The chart-topping album largely centered on the concept of Marshall Mathers being kidnapped by his alter ego, Slim Shady, and the internal conflict between these two sides of his personality.
Its lead single, “Houdini,” went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming his highest-charting song in a decade. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 281,000 equivalent album units in its first week. It marked his 11th number-one album — tying him with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, and Kanye West for the fifth-most number ones in Billboard 200 history.
The album earned three nods at the 2025 GRAMMYs, including his eighth for Best Rap Album — a category he has won six times.
Stans Documentary and Soundtrack (2025)
The documentary Stans was released in August 2025. The film examines Eminem’s life and career through the perspective of 20 fans of his music. Stans: The Official Soundtrack was released in August 2025 and featured previously released material as well as one unreleased track, “Everybody’s Looking at Me.”

Personal Life: Love, Loss, and Fatherhood
Kim Scott: The Love That Inspired a Thousand Songs
Eminem met Kim Ann Scott at a house party when he was 15, and she was 13. Their relationship became one of the most turbulent and creatively prolific in music history. They married in 1999, divorced in 2001, remarried in January 2006, and divorced again later that same year. Their on-and-off relationship inspired some of the most raw and emotionally charged music of his career. Despite the storms, they have co-parented their children with care and commitment.
His Three Children: Hailie, Alaina, and Stevie
Eminem has called his children his proudest accomplishments. He has three.
Hailie Jade Scott (born December 25, 1995) is his only biological child with Kim Scott. She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in psychology and a 3.9 GPA. She hosts her own podcast, Just a Little Shady. She married businessman Evan McClintock in May 2024 in a ceremony attended by Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, and Jimmy Iovine.
Alaina Marie Mathers (born February 22, 1993) is the daughter of Kim’s sister, Dawn Scott. Eminem adopted her in the early 2000s and has always considered her his own. He walked her down the aisle when she married Matt Moeller in June 2023.
Stevie Laine Mathers (born April 16, 2002) is the child of Kim Scott and her then-boyfriend Eric Hartter. Eminem took on a parental role and has raised Stevie as his own.
Grandpa Marshall: Elliot Marshall McClintock
In October 2024, Eminem revealed — through the music video for his song “Temporary” — that Hailie Jade was pregnant. The new baby boy’s name is Elliot Marshall McClintock. In an Instagram post on April 4, Hailie revealed he was born on March 14, 2025.
His middle name, Marshall, pays tribute to his grandfather, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, while some onlookers have noted that his initials could also be read as “EM&M.”
It was a moment of profound joy for a man who has always put fatherhood at the center of his life.
