Berry was born in Darlington, County Durham, but raised in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Berry is the daughter of Tom (owner of a dry cleaning business in Richmond, North Yorkshire) and Anita Berry.

Berry studied business and graphic design at Newcastle Polytechnic and worked as a student in Thames Television’s press office.

Berry quit her studies in 1982 to work at Thames Television before joining the theatrical firm Duncan Heath Associates Ltd (later acquired by the International Creative Management (ICM) Group).[4][5] Clients include Christopher Lee, Ian McShane, Paul McCartney, and David Bowie.[6] In 1988[4], she departed the corporation as a director.

Berry began working for London Weekend Television (LWT) in 1989 as a light entertainment researcher.  Beginning in 1990, Berry worked extensively as a producer and development executive for Scottish Television Enterprises, both in Glasgow and London, where she received three BAFTA awards.

Berry began working with BAFTA as Director of Development and Events in October 1998. She became its CEO in December 2000 and is largely regarded as having altered the Academy’s fortunes in 2001 by moving the date of its annual Film Awards event ahead of the American Academy’s Oscars.

The move raised BAFTA’s international profile at a time when it was overshadowed by other organizations during the awards season, and studios and industry observers now regard BAFTA’s Film Awards as one of the most reliable predictors of the Oscars, as well as the pre-eminent film awards outside of the annual Hollywood ceremony.
Berry received an OBE for services to the film industry in the Queen’s 2009 Birthday Honours List.

Berry was selected Media Boss of the Year by Pathfinders, as well as Woman of the Year. In 2010, Berry was named one of the Telegraph’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Britain: Entertainment, Media, and Sports.
