Who Is Pratibha Ranta?
Pratibha Ranta is an Indian actress and model born on December 17, 2000, in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. She works primarily in Hindi films and television. In just a few short years, she has moved from small-town Himachal Pradesh to winning one of Indian cinema’s most prestigious acting awards.
She is best known for her breakthrough role as Jaya in the 2024 critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. The role earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress at the 70th Filmfare Awards in 2025.
Furthermore, she won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female at the 2025 IIFA Awards. Therefore, within a single year, Pratibha Ranta established herself as one of the most promising young talents in Indian cinema.
Beyond the big screen, she is also active on OTT platforms and continues to take on challenging roles. Most recently, she appeared in The Revolutionaries (2026) on Amazon Prime Video and in the film Accused (2026).
Early Life: From Shimla’s Orchards to Mumbai’s Film Sets
A Village Childhood in Himachal Pradesh
Pratibha Ranta was born in a middle-class Himachali family in a small village named Daroti in Tikkar Tehsil, Shimla District of Himachal Pradesh, India. She grew up surrounded by the folk traditions, festivals, and natural beauty of the Himalayan foothills. These roots shaped her warmth and authenticity — qualities that would later define her screen presence.
Family Background
Her mother, Sandheshna Ranta, and father, Rajesh Ranta, instilled in their children a sense of discipline and encouragement within their family. She has an elder sister, Abha Ranta, who later accompanied her to Mumbai, and a younger brother. Her grandfather’s name is Amichand Ranta and her grandmother’s name is Shanti Ranta.
Her father’s love for cinema played a key role in sparking her interest in acting. Despite being from an academic household, the family supported her artistic ambitions.
The Preity Zinta Connection
Pratibha studied at the Convent of Jesus & Mary School in Shimla. The actress studied at the same school as Veer Zaara’s actress Preity Zinta did.
The comparison did not stop at school. Pratibha revealed: “It is ironic that Preity Zinta is from my hometown (Shimla, Himachal Pradesh) and studied at the same school. Everyone would call me Preity Zinta.” Far from being discouraged, she turned that comparison into motivation. “Ab to main Preity Zinta ban ke rahungi,” she declared — and she has been working hard to do exactly that.
Dance, Theatre, and Silver Medals
Pratibha’s performing arts journey started early. She trained as a dancer at the Shimla Dance Centre and was active in school theatre and cultural shows from a young age.
She was a member of the dance group Meeker Yanks crew, which performed in Pahari dresses at the Indian Hip Hop Dance Competition in Mumbai in 2017, securing the silver medal. This competition brought her to Mumbai for the first time. The city caught her imagination, and she never looked back.
Higher Education in Mumbai
After completing school in Shimla, Pratibha moved to Mumbai with her sister Abha. She enrolled at Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Management in Mumbai, where she studied filmmaking. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter.
Career Journey: From Beauty Pageants to Bollywood
Miss Mumbai 2018: The First Big Step
She was crowned Miss Mumbai in 2018 and went on to receive opportunities for auditions and acting. The title opened doors. Pratibha began appearing in television commercials and photoshoots, steadily building her name in the Mumbai entertainment circuit.
However, acting — not modelling — was always her true goal. “I only saw myself as an actor,” she told Filmfare in an exclusive interview.
Television Debut: Qurbaan Hua (2020–2021)
In 2020, Pratibha made her acting debut on the popular Zee TV drama series Qurbaan Hua. She played Chahat Baig Bhatt Dhyani opposite Karan Jotwani. The show gave her immense national exposure and a strong foundation in the craft of long-form television drama.
She won the Favourite Naya Sadasya (Female) award at the Zee Rishtey Awards 2020 for her performance. She has since acknowledged that the show taught her a great deal about acting. “I have learnt a lot about acting because of my show Qurbaan Hua,” she said in an interview with the Times of India.
OTT Debut: Aadha Ishq (2022)
After her successful television run, Pratibha transitioned to the digital world. In 2022, she made her OTT debut with the romantic drama thriller Aadha Ishq on Voot Select. She played the role of Rene Bhardwaj in the nine-episode web series, which premiered on May 12, 2022. The series starred Gaurav Arora, Aamna Sharif, Kunaal Roy Kapur, and Darsheel Safary alongside her.
The Breakthrough: Laapataa Ladies (2024)
Everything changed in 2024. Laapataa Ladies, released internationally as Lost Ladies, stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan, and tells the story of two young newlywed brides who get exchanged during a train ride to their husbands’ homes. The film was directed by Kiran Rao and produced under Aamir Khan Productions.
Pratibha played the dual role of Jaya Tripathi Singh and Pushpa Rani — a complex, layered performance that drew widespread critical admiration. Kiran Rao cast her for this project after a rigorous audition process.
The film had a grand international debut. It was released theatrically on 1 March 2024, after first premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2023.
The film’s success was historic. At the 70th Filmfare Awards, Laapataa Ladies received a record-breaking 24 nominations and won 13 awards, including Best Film and Best Director. Both leading ladies won awards, with Goel getting Best Debut Actor Female and Ranta getting the Critics’ Award for Best Actor Female.
Moreover, Pratibha Ranta won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female at the 2025 IIFA Awards. She was also nominated for Best Actress at the 2024 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi (2024)
In the same year, Pratibha appeared in another prestigious project. She appeared in the role of Shama, a Vaishya’s daughter, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series Heeramandi. The contrast between her earthy, restrained performance in Laapataa Ladies and her more ornate, heightened register in Heeramandi showcased her remarkable range as an actress.
Accused (2026)
She also worked in the film Accused, directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, in 2026, appearing alongside Konkona Sen Sharma. The psychological thriller marked another bold genre choice, proving Pratibha’s willingness to take on diverse and demanding material.
The Revolutionaries (2026)
In 2026, Pratibha Ranta appeared in the historical series The Revolutionaries, directed by Nikkhil Advani. In it, she played the role of Pratibha Lahiri, the wife of freedom fighter and revolutionary Sachindranath Sanyal.
The series was released on 11 September 2026 on Amazon Prime Video. It also starred Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Gurfateh Pirzada, and Jason Shah.
Pratibha described the role as transformative. She wrote on Instagram: “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to talk about The Revolutionaries without feeling a little emotional. Through Pratibha Lahiri, I got to experience and portray women who love deeply, carry so much, and yet find a way to keep going and stay strong through it all.”
She described her character as “a very avid reader, very interested in studies,” adding that the character would even solve coded letters exchanged between Pratibha Lahiri and Sachindra Nath Sanyal. “And it was just absolutely amazing,” she said.
Personal Life: Grounded, Private, and Driven
Pratibha keeps her personal life largely out of the public eye. She is currently unmarried and focuses entirely on her growing career. She lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, while her hometown remains Shimla, Himachal Pradesh and belongs to a Brahmin Himachali family. Her mother tongue is Himachali.
Her hobbies include dancing, a passion that has been a part of her life since childhood. She remains active on social media under the Instagram handle @pratibha_ranta.
