Who Is Lionel Messi?

Lionel Andrés Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. He is a professional footballer. He is also, by the widest consensus in sporting history, the greatest player to ever play the game.

He has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards — more than any other player in history. Furthermore, he is the most decorated player of all time, having won a total of 46 team trophies.

Today, he captains both the Argentina national team and Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF. At 38 years old, he continues to rewrite record books. He continues to dazzle fans. Most importantly, he continues to play football that no one else on earth can replicate.

Early Life: A Boy, a Ball, and a Battle Against the Odds

Growing Up in Rosario

Lionel Messi’s parents are Jorge Horacio Messi and Celia María Cuccittini, both from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Jorge worked as a steelworker at Acindar and coached youth football at Club Atlético Grandoli. Celia was a part-time cleaner.

Messi has three siblings: older brothers Rodrigo and Matías, and younger sister María Sol. All four grew up together in Rosario.

Messi’s family has Italian and Spanish ancestry through his father’s side, reflecting Rosario’s European immigrant heritage. From his earliest days, football was not just a sport in the Messi household. It was a language. It was a way of life.

Football From the Very Beginning

Lionel Messi showed an early passion for soccer, following in the footsteps of his elder brothers. His journey in soccer began at just eight years old when he was recruited by Newell’s Old Boys, a local club that nurtured his talent.

Even then, something was different about him. His touch was extraordinary. His vision was instinctive. His love for the game was total.

The Diagnosis That Changed Everything

Life, however, was not straightforward for young Messi. Noticeably undersized among his peers, Messi was 10 when he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, and a pediatric endocrinologist recommended regular hormone injections.

The biggest challenge was undoubtedly the cost of his growth hormone deficiency treatment. It was very expensive — around $900 a month — which was a huge financial strain for his working-class parents.

After two years, his father’s insurance coverage ran out, and they were unsure where to turn next. It seemed as if a brilliant football career might end before it had truly begun.

The Napkin Contract That Started a Legend

Fate, however, had other plans. Fate intervened when an Argentine sports agent got hold of a tape of the gifted 12-year-old, and he arranged an invitation to a tryout with FC Barcelona in 2000.

Barcelona offered to pay for his medical treatment if he moved to Spain and joined their famous youth academy, La Masia. This was a life-changing offer. Jorge arranged the FC Barcelona trial in 2000, which led to the club funding his growth hormone treatment in exchange for Messi joining La Masia.

In September 2000, father and son boarded a plane to Barcelona. The rest of the world has never been the same since.

Loneliness at La Masia

Life in Barcelona was not easy at first. In his first year in Spain, Messi rarely played with the youth team due to a transfer conflict with Newell’s Old Boys. As a foreigner, he could only be fielded in friendlies and the Catalan league.

Without football, he struggled to integrate into the team. Already reserved by nature, he was so quiet that his teammates initially believed he was mute. At home, he suffered from homesickness after his mother moved back to Rosario with his brothers and little sister, while he stayed in Barcelona with his father.

However, resilience ran deep in Messi’s character. After completing his growth hormone treatment aged 14, the transfer conflict was finally resolved. Now playing in all competitions, he befriended his teammates, among whom were Cesc Fàbregas and Gerard Piqué.

Messi became an integral part of the “Baby Dream Team” — Barcelona’s greatest-ever youth side. The lonely boy from Rosario had found his home.

FC Barcelona: A 17-Year Love Affair (2004–2021)

The Professional Debut

Messi’s remarkable talent was evident even as a teenager, culminating in his official debut for the first team at just 16 years old. He made his La Liga debut on October 16, 2004. He was the youngest player in Barcelona’s history to appear in a competitive match.

Scoring 38 goals in 31 games in his debut season at the under-16 level, and the rest is history. The world was about to meet its greatest.

Breaking Every Record Imaginable

Lionel Messi spent 17 seasons at FC Barcelona (2004–2021), becoming the club’s all-time top scorer with 672 goals and winning 35 trophies.

By the time of his 2021 departure, Messi had cemented himself as Barça’s all-time leader for appearances (766) and starts (687) in all competitions. He averaged a goal every 94 minutes during his 17-year stint in the club’s senior team. His 260 assists were some 123 more than Xavi, who boasts the second-best figure since Opta records began.

Messi directly contributed to a staggering 924 goals while at Barça. The next-best figure by a single player in that time belongs to Luis Suárez, who managed 295.

The Season That Defied Belief: 2011–12

Of all his incredible seasons, one stands above the rest. Lionel Messi scored 73 goals during the 2011–12 season while playing for FC Barcelona, breaking a 39-year-old record for single-season goals in a major European football league.

That number — 73 goals in a single season — remains one of sport’s most staggering individual achievements.

Trophies at Barcelona

The Argentine lifted 35 trophies during his time at Camp Nou — including La Liga 10 times and the Champions League on four occasions. He won seven Copa del Rey titles. He won three FIFA Club World Cups. He won the UEFA Super Cup three times.

Moreover, he won six Ballon d’Or awards while at Barcelona. Each one confirmed what every football fan already knew — he was in a class entirely of his own.

The Tearful Goodbye (2021)

In August 2021, the unthinkable happened. When financial troubles left Barça unable to renew Messi’s contract ahead of the 2021–22 season, he bid a tearful farewell to his adopted home.

The press conference, where Messi wept openly, became one of the most emotional moments in football history. An era had ended. However, for Messi, the journey was far from over.

Paris Saint-Germain: A Chapter of Mixed Emotions (2021–2023)

Later in 2021, Messi signed with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he joined superstars Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. That year he received yet another Ballon d’Or. He helped PSG win the Ligue 1 title in each of his two seasons with the team.

However, Paris was never truly home. His 26 league appearances in 2021–22 were his fewest in any league campaign since 2006–07, when he was still a teenager. He was limited to just six goals and nine assists in the French top flight.

Early Champions League exits at the hands of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich gave way to fan protests. Despite the challenges, Messi remained professional. He remained determined. He remained Messi.

Argentina: From Heartbreak to World Champion

Years of Near Misses

For years, Messi’s international career was overshadowed by unfulfilled expectations. In 2014, Messi led Argentina to the World Cup final, which Argentina lost, but Messi won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

Copa América finals in 2007, 2015, and 2016 all ended in defeat. The weight of a nation rested on his shoulders. Nevertheless, he never stopped trying.

2021 Copa América: The Breakthrough

He led Argentina’s national team to win the 2021 Copa América. It was his first major trophy with Argentina. After 16 years of international football, Messi finally had what he had always wanted most.

The tears he shed that night matched those at his Barcelona farewell. But these were tears of pure joy.

2022 FIFA World Cup: The Ultimate Crowning Glory

On December 18, 2022, in Lusail, Qatar, Lionel Messi achieved the one thing that had eluded him throughout his career.

He led Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when he again won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

He is the all-time top scorer in the history of the World Cup with a total of 20 goals. His performance in the final — scoring twice in normal time, once in extra time, and converting in the penalty shootout — was perhaps the single greatest individual performance in a World Cup Final in history.

The GOAT debate was over. It had never really been in doubt.

2024 Copa América: Back-to-Back Champions

Messi led Argentina to win the 2024 Copa América. Back-to-back continental titles. Furthermore, Argentina qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of the top six teams from South America. In March 2025, Argentina qualified to defend its title at the World Cup.

Inter Miami CF: Reinventing American Soccer (2023–Present)

The Arrival That Shook MLS

In 2023, Messi joined Inter Miami of Major League Soccer. The announcement sent shockwaves through American sport. Suddenly, MLS was the centre of the football universe.

Messi initially arrived in South Florida in the summer of 2023, kickstarting an era of success for the club. He was key in captaining Inter Miami to its historic first four trophies — winning the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, the 2025 Eastern Conference title, and the 2025 MLS Cup.

2024 Season: MVP in His Debut Year

He scored 20 goals in the 2024 season and was named the league’s MVP. Not only did Messi dominate statistically. He transformed the entire culture of soccer in the United States.

2025 Season: The MLS Cup and Another MVP

Messi also had a stellar season in 2025, helping the club win its first MLS Cup. The league’s top scorer with 29 goals, he also won his second MVP award, becoming the first player to earn the honor in consecutive seasons.

On December 6, 2025, Inter Miami defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 3–1, to earn the franchise’s first-ever MLS Cup title. Messi was named MVP with two assists. “This is the moment I had been waiting for, and that we, as a team, were waiting for. It’s very beautiful for all of us,” he told MLS.com.

100 Appearances and a Historic Legacy

Messi has established himself as Inter Miami’s all-time leader both in goals and assists, tallying 86 goals and 55 assists in 100 appearances across all competitions.

On the international stage, Messi guided Inter Miami to a historic round-of-16 berth in the revamped 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, including scoring a free kick in a historic 2–1 victory against FC Porto. This saw Inter Miami become the first club in CONCACAF history to defeat a European opponent in an official competition.

Contract Through 2028

Messi signed a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami running through the 2028 season. He is also expected to acquire an equity stake in the team upon his retirement.

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality,” Messi said. “Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

Personal Life: Love, Family, and the Foundation

Antonela Roccuzzo: A Love Story From Childhood

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was training at the youth academy run by Newell’s Old Boys when teammate Lucas Scaglia invited Messi to spend vacation with his family one summer. And that’s when he met Scaglia’s cousin, Antonela Roccuzzo.

Messi met Roccuzzo in their hometown of Rosario when he was 5 years old. Their childhood friendship slowly, quietly blossomed into the love of a lifetime.

On June 30, 2017, Messi married Antonella Roccuzzo in a civil ceremony dubbed by Argentina’s Clarín newspaper as the “wedding of the century,” held at a luxury hotel in Rosario, with several fellow star soccer players and Colombian pop star Shakira on the 260-person guest list.

Three Sons

Messi and Roccuzzo have three children together: Thiago, born in November 2012; Mateo, born in September 2015; and Ciro, born in March 2018.

Messi’s three sons — Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro — are enrolled in Inter Miami CF’s MLS Next youth academy in Florida. The apple, it seems, does not fall far from the tree.

The Leo Messi Foundation

In 2007, Messi formed the Leo Messi Foundation to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youths. Although he is famously private off the field, his generosity and commitment to social causes have quietly impacted thousands of lives across the globe. He is not just the greatest footballer of all time. He is also one of its most generous ambassadors.
