Who Is ExtraEmily?
Emily Xuechun Zhang, known online as ExtraEmily, is an American Twitch streamer and YouTuber. She is best known for her IRL content and is considered one of the top-performing female streamers on the entirety of the platform.
She is also something far rarer — a Columbia University graduate in financial engineering who walked away from banking to chase a streaming career. That decision paid off.
ExtraEmily commands more than 950,000 Twitch followers and has crossed into mainstream television. Furthermore, she holds the distinction of being the first Twitch creator to receive her own dedicated series on Hulu and Disney+ — a milestone that reflects just how far she has come.
Early Life: Nebraska Roots, Chinese Heritage, and a New York Education
Growing Up in Omaha
Zhang was born on January 16, 1998, to Chinese parents, and spent her childhood living in Omaha, Nebraska.
She grew up with a strong academic drive. Her parents had high expectations. She met them — and then some.
Columbia University and the Road to Financial Engineering
In 2016, Emily enrolled at Columbia University in New York City to study Financial Engineering, where she also joined the Tau Colony of the Asian-interest sorority Kappa Phi Lambda. She excelled academically throughout her time at Columbia, graduating magna cum laude in 2020.
Her degree in financial engineering from one of the world’s most prestigious universities signaled a future on Wall Street. However, life had other plans.
A Banking Job, a Twitch Channel, and a Firing That Changed Everything
After graduating, ExtraEmily moved from Nebraska to New York City and took a job at a local bank. At the same time, she quietly began streaming on Twitch.
By 2022, she had gone from balancing a tech analyst job to becoming a full-time streamer after being let go by her job for streaming during work hours.
What looked like a setback turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her. Because of that firing, she became one of Twitch’s most beloved creators.
Twitch Career: From Gaming Streams to IRL Icon
The Beginning: Wii Sports and a Friend Named Nicro (2020)
ExtraEmily’s early days on Twitch were centered around gaming streams, especially Wii Sports and other Nintendo Wii titles like Super Mario 64. A major boost during this period came from her friend Nicro, a fellow Twitch streamer who already had a small, loyal following.
Nicro regularly “raided” Emily’s channel at the end of his broadcasts. This sent his audience directly into her stream. It was organic. It was genuine. And it worked.
The Pivot to IRL Streaming (2022)
Emily began her career mostly as a variety gaming streamer, but quickly changed routes and became a full-time IRL streamer during early 2022.
This shift defined her brand. She is now known for doing “a variety of things in public, oftentimes alongside her fellow streamers as collaborators.” Her audience connects with her not because she is a skilled gamer. They connect with her because she is genuinely, refreshingly herself.
OTK Schooled: The Contest That Launched Her Into a New Orbit
One of the most important moments in her career came through the OTK Schooled competition. Emily initially placed 2nd, but after the show’s victor was exposed for cheating, she was eventually crowned the true champion of OTK Schooled. Following her victory, she was awarded $50,000 and was invited to visit Mizkif along with all members of One True King in Austin, Texas. This helped her Twitch channel explode in popularity, going from 25,000 followers to over 80,000 in the span of 3 months.
Therefore, one competition changed everything. That is how fast momentum can shift in the streaming world.
Joining One True King (January 2023)
During a Shareholders Meeting livestream on January 31, 2023, popular streamer organization One True King (OTK) announced the signing of popular content creator Emily “ExtraEmily.”
This affiliation introduced her to broader audiences through OTK’s network. Moreover, it gave her collaborative opportunities with some of Twitch’s biggest names. Additionally, it positioned her as a legitimate force in the creator economy — not just a rising streamer, but a professional.
The Wall-A-Thon and Her Signature Creativity (April 2023)
On April 9, 2023, Emily “ExtraEmily” surprised her viewers with a unique Easter idea. During her live stream, she revealed plans to be taped to a wall belonging to Tim “EsfandTV’s” house. She called it the “Wall-A-Thon.” It became a viral moment that perfectly illustrated her off-the-wall humor and community-first energy.
Co-Hosting The Streamer Awards Red Carpet (February 2024)
On February 17, 2024, Emily co-hosted the red carpet event at the yearly The Streamer Awards, with fellow streamers CDawgVA and Will Neff.
Furthermore, Emily went on to win The Streamer Awards 2024 in the category “League Of Their Own.” This award recognized her as a streamer who had carved out a genuinely unique lane on the platform.
Always On, Connected By AT&T: A Major IRL Show (2024–2025)
On February 5, 2024, during the OTK Shareholders Meeting, Emily, along with fellow org member Emiru, announced they would host an IRL show together called “Always On Connected By AT&T,” where the pair could show off AT&T’s network while doing various activities throughout the year.
The show proved to be a major success. On December 18, 2024, after the massive success of season 1 of “Always On Connected By AT&T”, Emily and Emiru announced during the season finale their show’s renewal for season 2 in 2025.
Streamer University with Kai Cenat (May 2025)
On May 16, 2025, Emily was invited and accepted as a Professor for Kai Cenat’s 4-day event (May 22–25) called “Streamer University.”
The results were enormous. She set a new personal record for peak concurrent viewers, drawing 55,739 fans during her Streamer University broadcast. She was 7th on the list for most-viewed streamers at Kai Cenat’s “Streamer University” out of the 137 content creators that participated, clocking in 42 hours and 1.02M views.
The Elden Ring Marathon (August 2025)
On August 5, 2025, Emily began her Elden Ring Co-Op Marathon with fellow streamer Agent00, where they couldn’t end the stream until they had beaten the game. For day 1, Emily hit her record peak viewership with 55,284 concurrent viewers on Twitch. By the end of the marathon on August 11, she garnered 2.75 million hours watched and 53,775 followers across 146 hours of stream uptime.
This marathon cemented her status as one of Twitch’s most compelling live event creators.
The Streamer Awards 2025 and Departing OTK (Late 2025–January 2026)
In December 2025, ExtraEmily won the Best Stream Duo award at The Streamer Awards alongside Agent00, recognizing their collaborative content.
Then, at the end of her OTK chapter, on January 31, 2026, Emily left the organization after the expiration of her three-year contract, which she decided not to renew.
By late 2025, ExtraEmily publicly discussed ending her OTK contract and pursuing a more independent path. The move generated significant discussion among fans because it represented a new chapter in her career.
Television Debut: From Twitch to Hulu and Disney+
Rabbit Hole (July 2026)
In July, pocket.watch launched Rabbit Hole, a 10-episode variety series that premiered on Disney+ and Hulu, assembling 36 creators with a combined social following of 675 million, including ExtraEmily.
This was her television debut. It placed her alongside some of the digital world’s biggest names. However, it was only the beginning.
ExtraEmily: Creator Essentials — A Solo Hulu Series (August 2026)
ExtraEmily has become the first Twitch creator to receive her own dedicated series on Hulu and Disney+, a landmark achievement that reflects just how far the creator economy has come.
The show, made for teen audiences, repackages Zhang’s previous vlogs and streams into a more traditional episodic TV format for Hulu/Disney+ viewers. The series is produced by pocket.watch, a children and family media company that develops entertainment franchises around popular digital creators and YouTube personalities.
The series arrives as part of a larger content push from pocket.watch, and pocket.watch has said that Emily is among three cast members, alongside Collins Key and Sofie Dossi, launching individual series timed to the Rabbit Hole premiere.
This is a genuinely historic milestone — not just for Emily, but for IRL streaming as a whole.
Viewership and Platform Statistics
In 2025, ExtraEmily’s channel surpassed 15.6 million hours watched, making it the third-highest among female Twitch streamers, trailing only Emiru and Ironmouse, and placing 73rd overall on the platform.
