Who Is Eugenia Volodina?
Eugenia Volodina is one of the most iconic Russian supermodels of the early 2000s. Known professionally as “Zhenya,” her full name is Eugenia Evgenievna Volodina (Russian: Евгения Володина). She is celebrated for her striking blue-eyed beauty, razor-sharp bone structure, and an effortless presence that defined the look of a generation.
She is widely credited with sparking the Russian model invasion internationally. Before her, Brazilian models dominated the industry. After her, a wave of Russian beauty reshaped the global runways entirely.
Since 2002, Volodina has worked with numerous fashion magazines such as Vanity Fair, Elle, Vogue, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, and Numéro. Furthermore, she has starred in advertising campaigns for some of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. She remains one of the most recognizable faces in the history of Russian modeling.
Early Life: Growing Up in Kazan
Roots in Tatarstan
Eugenia Volodina was born on September 23, 1984, in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia. She was raised a Christian and, after finishing school, wanted to attend university.
Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan. It is a culturally rich city located at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers. Growing up there, Eugenia showed early signs of the discipline and ambition that would later define her global career.
She has a brother and two sisters. Notably, all three Volodina sisters dreamed of becoming models from an early age. It was their older sister Yulia who set the tone. However, it was Eugenia who would ultimately become the star.
First Steps in Fashion
Volodina entered the Miss Advertising contest, where Moscow photographer Alexei Vasiliev took a few photos and sent them to a modelling agency in Paris. This small act of chance set her entire career in motion.
Before leaving for Paris, she also attended a studio at the Theatre of Fashion “Lik,” where she received her first professional lessons in modeling. These early classes gave her the foundational poise and runway technique she would later bring to the world stage.
Career Journey: From Open Casting to Global Icon
The Open Call That Changed Everything (1998)
Volodina started her career in 1998 when she walked in an open call at a Russian casting agency. She was just 14 years old. Most teenagers her age were focused on school. Eugenia, however, was already taking her first steps toward a career that would span continents.
Soon after, she was sent to Paris, where Volodina began to establish her career. The move was bold. Paris was, and remains, the world capital of high fashion. For a teenager from Kazan, it was a leap of extraordinary courage.
Signed in Paris (2000)
In 2000, she was signed by a Parisian modelling agency and decided to pursue her career there. This signing was the foundation everything else was built on. Paris opened doors. It introduced Eugenia to the full machinery of international fashion. Because of this, she was positioned perfectly for her breakthrough.
The Vogue Italia Cover That Launched Everything (2002)
Then came the moment that changed the industry.
Increased attention came in 2002 when fashion photographer Steven Meisel featured her in Italian Vogue. Steven Meisel is not simply a photographer. He is the man who makes careers. A cover shot by Meisel in Vogue Italia is one of the most powerful endorsements in all of fashion. Therefore, when he chose Eugenia, the world paid attention.
Volodina then got the nickname “Zhenya,” which is known as Zhenial (genius). The nickname stuck. It was both affectionate and accurate.
The Gucci Breakthrough (2002)
The Vogue cover was just the beginning.
That same year, Volodina took part in a Gucci ad campaign alongside fellow Russian Natalia Vodianova and opened and closed the Gucci fall/winter 2002 show in Milan.
Volodina was “the look,” the “Femme Fatale” — gentle but at the same time dangerous because of her dazzling beauty. This was exactly the image which Gucci was looking for.
Opening and closing a Gucci show in Milan is one of the highest honors a model can receive. It signals absolute trust from one of the world’s most powerful fashion houses. Furthermore, doing it alongside Natalia Vodianova — herself one of Russia’s greatest supermodels — confirmed that a new chapter in international fashion had begun.
Victoria’s Secret: The Only Non-Angel to Open a Segment (2002–2007)
Eugenia Volodina’s relationship with Victoria’s Secret is one of the most distinguished chapters of her career.
Volodina managed to carry the Victoria’s Secret wings, modelled for Victoria’s Secret in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007, and was the only non-Angel to open a segment in 2005.
This achievement is significant. Victoria’s Secret Angels are the brand’s contracted elite. They are its permanent faces. For a non-Angel to open a segment of the show was an exceptional honor. It meant Eugenia held a status in the fashion world that transcended any single brand’s label.
The 2005 Pirelli Calendar
She appeared in the 2005 Pirelli Calendar alongside Julia Stegner and Adriana Lima.
The Pirelli Calendar is one of fashion photography’s most prestigious institutions. Being selected for it — particularly alongside names like Adriana Lima — placed Eugenia firmly among the world’s most sought-after models.
A Decade of Magazine Covers
After 2002, her editorial work became relentless. She has been featured in the editorials of magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D, Numéro, and Elle.
She also appeared on the covers of Elle Spain and Harper’s Bazaar Ukraine. Additionally, her most recent editorial work included participation in Ulyana Sergeenko’s Haute Couture Spring 2014 show and an advertising campaign for IRFE.
Advertising Campaigns: A Who’s Who of Luxury
Volodina’s résumé includes advertising campaigns for Escada, Bvlgari, Bill Blass, Versace, Valentino, Zac Posen, Salvatore Ferragamo, Fendi, Chanel eyewear, Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ann Taylor, Elie Tahari, Biotherm, Thierry Mugler beauty, and Céline.
She also appeared in the catalogs of Bloomingdale’s, Louis Vuitton, Neiman Marcus, Kenzo, and Hermès.
Moreover, Valentino chose her as the face of his fragrance Valentino V. Volodina is also the face of the underwear brand Eres.
Volodina was planned to be the newest face of J’adore Dior — instead, they stayed with Carmen Kass. Volodina signed with Yves Saint Laurent cosmetics that same year.
The Return: Balmain Fall/Winter 2017
Even after years at the top, Eugenia’s story did not end in the mid-2000s. She was back on the runway at the Balmain Fall/Winter 2017 fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. Her return to the Balmain runway confirmed that her standing in the fashion world remained intact — and that her appeal had not faded.
Personal Life: Private, Purposeful, and Passionate
A Student of Interior Design
In one of her interviews for Marie Claire Russia, Volodina said she was studying interior design in Paris, where she lived at that time. This detail speaks to a woman who builds a life beyond the camera. She is not simply a model. She is a creator with aesthetic sensibilities that extend well beyond the runway.
Family and Faith
Volodina was raised a Christian. She has a brother and two sisters. She has occasionally posted photos of her parents and family on social media, offering rare and warm glimpses into her private world.
She keeps her romantic life away from public view. Therefore, no confirmed information about her relationship status is publicly available.
