Who Is Erling Haaland?

Erling Haaland is a Norwegian professional footballer. He plays as a striker for Manchester City in the Premier League and for the Norway national team.

He is among the most prolific goal scorers of his generation. In his first season with Manchester City (2022–23), Haaland set a new record for goals scored in a single Premier League season, finishing with 36.

Furthermore, as of mid-2026, he has scored over 112 Premier League goals in 132 appearances. He has also passed the 150-goal mark for Manchester City across all competitions.

Erling Haaland is not simply breaking records. He is rewriting what we thought was possible in modern football.

Early Life: Born in Leeds, Raised on Football

A City, a Family, and a Destiny

Erling Braut Haaland was born on July 21, 2000, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He is the son of former Norwegian footballer Alf-Inge Haaland and Gry Marita Braut.

At the time of his birth, his father was playing for Leeds United. This is why Erling also holds a British passport. However, he chose to represent Norway internationally.

When Erling was three years old, his family moved back to Bryne, Norway. Growing up in a sporting family gave him early exposure to professional football culture.

A Father Who Shaped a Champion

Erling’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, enjoyed a successful professional career as a defensive midfielder and defender. During a decade in English football, he represented clubs including Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Manchester City.

Alf-Inge’s career was effectively ended by a deliberate tackle from Roy Keane during a Manchester derby in April 2001. It was an act of revenge for an incident four years earlier. Despite that painful chapter, Alf-Inge channelled everything into his son’s development.

He was the one who brokered Erling’s relationship with super-agent Mino Raiola, flying to Monaco for a meeting during Erling’s teenage years that would shape the next decade of his career.

A Mother Who Set Athletic Standards

Haaland’s mother, Gry Marita Braut, is a teacher and a former heptathlete. Not only was his father a successful footballer, but his mother was also a former Norwegian heptathlon champion.

Therefore, Erling Haaland did not just inherit athletic talent. He was surrounded by it, nurtured by it, and shaped by it at every level.

A Sporting Family Dynasty

Athletic excellence runs especially deep on the Braut side of the family. Several of Erling’s cousins have pursued professional football careers, reinforcing the family’s reputation as one of Norway’s most talented sporting dynasties. Notable relatives include Jonatan Braut Brunes — a professional forward for OH Leuven — and Albert Braut Tjåland — a highly rated striker who developed through the youth ranks of Molde FK.

Erling is the third of three children. His older brother Astor and older sister Gabrielle complete the family.

The Boy Who Set a World Record at Age Five

The signs of greatness came early. At age five, Haaland is said to have set a world record in the standing long jump for his age group, jumping 1.63 metres.

Erling Haaland began playing football at the age of five with Bryne FK. His natural instinct for scoring became visible very early.

Club Career: A Journey Through Europe’s Elite

Bryne FK — The Beginning (2015–2016)

By age 15, Haaland showed enough promise to join the roster of Bryne FK, his local professional football team, which plays in Norway’s second-tier league.

During the 2015–2016 seasons, he played for Bryne 2 and scored 18 goals in 14 matches — an impressive record that showed his unusual finishing ability even before he fully developed physically.

He did not score in his first senior season with the first team. However, that did not slow him down. It only made him work harder.

Molde FK — Learning Under Solskjær (2017–2018)

In 2017, Haaland joined Molde FK, where he worked under former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Solskjær converted raw speed into the skills of a complete striker. Haaland flourished. At 15 he made his debut for Bryne in Norway’s second division, before Ole Gunnar Solskjær signed him for Molde in 2017. Suddenly, Haaland shot up — pumping iron and wolfing down meals, he quickly packed on kilos of muscle.

Red Bull Salzburg — The Explosion (2019–2020)

Haaland’s breakthrough came after signing for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

At RB Salzburg, he detonated: 29 goals in 27 games, including a strike in each of his first five Champions League appearances — a competition first for a teenager.

This was a signal to the entire football world. Something extraordinary was coming.

Borussia Dortmund — Becoming a Star (2020–2022)

In January 2020, Haaland moved to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. During his time at Dortmund, he won the DFB-Pokal and established himself among the world’s elite strikers.

Borussia Dortmund got him for a €20 million bargain. He repaid them with 86 goals in 89 games.

Moreover, he surpassed 300 career goals across Bryne, Molde, Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester City at just 24 years and 340 days old — the second-youngest player in the 21st century to reach that mark behind only Kylian Mbappé.

Manchester City — Where Legends Are Made (2022–Present)

Manchester City paid €60 million for Haaland in 2022 and received the most destructive debut season in English history.

In January 2025, Haaland signed a contract extension with Manchester City running until 2034, making him a Blue for the foreseeable future.

Haaland’s career goals at Manchester City now climb to fourth all-time in the club’s history. He scores a goal every 98 minutes in the Premier League on average.

Record-Breaking Seasons at Manchester City

2022–23: The Treble and the History Books

Haaland broke the Premier League single-season scoring record in 2022/23. He set a new best mark with a goal against West Ham in May 2023. He obliterated the 34-goal mark set by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole during the 1990s, adding one more before the end of the campaign to finish on 36. Cole and Shearer had a 42-match season when they set the previous record. But Haaland did it in just 31 matches.

Furthermore, Haaland won the Champions League Golden Boot in City’s treble-winning season.

His season total of 52 goals across all competitions is also a record for any player in English football history.

2023–24: Premier League Title and Back-to-Back Golden Boots

He won the league once more in 2023/24 and made it back-to-back Premier League Golden Boot prizes.

By scoring against Liverpool on November 25, 2023, he became the quickest player to reach a half-century of goals in the Premier League.

2024–25 and 2025–26: Continued Dominance

Haaland finished the 2024–25 Premier League season with 22 goals in 31 appearances, once again among the league’s top scorers.

In the 2025–26 Premier League season, Erling Haaland has recorded 27 goals and 8 assists.

Haaland reclaimed his status as the number one finisher in the Premier League in the 2025–26 season, winning his third Golden Boot in four attempts.

Haaland has 107 Premier League goals in 126 league appearances after hitting 100 in the English top flight in early December 2025.

International Career: Norway’s Greatest Goalscorer

A Stunning Senior Debut

Haaland has been a prominent figure for the Norway national team since his senior debut in 2019. He quickly became his country’s main attacking threat.

Nine Goals in One Match — A World Record

Haaland made a massive splash when, at 18 years old, he scored nine goals in a May 2019 match against Honduras in a FIFA Under-20 World Cup competition in Poland. This set a record for the most goals in a single match at the event.

Nine goals. In one game. At eighteen years old.

Norway’s All-Time Top Scorer and Captain

In 2024, Haaland became Norway’s all-time leading scorer with his 34th international goal. He was also named captain of the squad.

His return of 55 goals in 50 games has helped Norway become one of the most improved European nations in recent years.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup — A Historic Campaign

Haaland made his first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026.

His brace against Brazil sent Norway to its first World Cup quarterfinal ever. He reached seven World Cup goals — level at the top of the scoring charts with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

With three Premier League Golden Boots and a European Golden Shoe to his name, few would bet against Erling adding a FIFA World Cup Golden Shoe to his ever-growing collection.

Trophies and Honours

Club Honours

Throughout his career, Erling Haaland has won 14 titles, including the FA Cup (2022/23 and 2025/26), Premier League (2022/23 and 2023/24), Champions League (2022/23), EFL Cup (2025/26), UEFA Super Cup (2023/24), FIFA Club World Cup (2023), and Community Shield (2024/25) with Manchester City. He also won the DFB-Pokal (2020/21) with Borussia Dortmund and the Austrian Bundesliga (2018/19) with Red Bull Salzburg.

Personal Life: Grounded, Private, and Goal-Obsessed

Partner and Family

Haaland is in a long-term relationship with Isabel Haugseng Johansen, a childhood acquaintance from Bryne. She played for Bryne FK’s women’s team while Erling came through the men’s academy. They have been together since his Dortmund years.

The couple revealed in October 2024 that they were expecting their first child, who was born in December 2024.

The Lotus Position and Meditation

Haaland celebrates his goals distinctively. He meditates — a discipline evidenced in his well-known lotus celebration. This calm inner philosophy contrasts beautifully with his explosive on-field presence.

Minecraft, Kebabs, and Keeping It Real

He and his partner enjoy cooking, gaming (Minecraft), and returning home for simple pleasures like local kebabs. He follows a disciplined routine emphasising nutrition, recovery, and family time.

The Music Group Nobody Expected

As a teenager, Haaland formed a music group called Flow Kingz with some of his Norway under-17 teammates. It is one of the most unexpected fun facts about one of football’s biggest stars.

Playing Style: The Complete Modern Striker

Haaland stands at 1.95 metres (6 feet 5 inches). He is one of the tallest elite forwards in the history of football. His height, combined with explosive pace, strength, and agility, makes him a unique physical specimen. Defenders often struggle to contain him in aerial duels, while his acceleration and movement allow him to be just as dangerous on the ground.

Although he is primarily known for goals, Erling Haaland also contributes through pressing, hold-up play, and creating space for teammates. His partnership with Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City has become one of the most productive attacking connections in European football.
