Who Is Erling Haaland?

Erling Haaland is a Norwegian professional footballer. He plays as a striker for Manchester City in the Premier League and for the Norway national team.

He is among the most prolific goal scorers of his generation. In his first season with Manchester City (2022–23), Haaland set a new record for goals scored in a single Premier League season, finishing with 36.

Furthermore, as of mid-2026, he has scored over 112 Premier League goals in 132 appearances. He has also passed the 150-goal mark for Manchester City across all competitions.

Early Life: Born in Leeds, Raised on Football

A City, a Family, and a Destiny

Erling Braut Haaland was born on July 21, 2000, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He is the son of former Norwegian footballer Alf-Inge Haaland and Gry Marita Braut.

At the time of his birth, his father was playing for Leeds United. This is why Erling also holds a British passport. However, he chose to represent Norway internationally.

When Erling was three years old, his family moved back to Bryne, Norway. Growing up in a sporting family gave him early exposure to professional football culture.

A Father Who Shaped a Champion

Erling’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, enjoyed a successful professional career as a defensive midfielder and defender. During a decade in English football, he represented clubs including Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Manchester City.

Alf-Inge’s career was effectively ended by a deliberate tackle from Roy Keane during a Manchester derby in April 2001. It was an act of revenge for an incident four years earlier. Despite that painful chapter, Alf-Inge channelled everything into his son’s development.

He was the one who brokered Erling’s relationship with super-agent Mino Raiola, flying to Monaco for a meeting during Erling’s teenage years that would shape the next decade of his career.

Haaland’s mother, Gry Marita Braut, is a teacher and a former heptathlete. Not only was his father a successful footballer, but his mother was also a former Norwegian heptathlon champion.

Bryne FK — The Beginning (2015–2016)

By age 15, Haaland showed enough promise to join the roster of Bryne FK, his local professional football team, which plays in Norway’s second-tier league.

During the 2015–2016 seasons, he played for Bryne 2 and scored 18 goals in 14 matches — an impressive record that showed his unusual finishing ability even before he fully developed physically.

He did not score in his first senior season with the first team. However, that did not slow him down. It only made him work harder.

Molde FK — Learning Under Solskjær (2017–2018)

In 2017, Haaland joined Molde FK, where he worked under former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Solskjær converted raw speed into the skills of a complete striker. Haaland flourished. At 15 he made his debut for Bryne in Norway’s second division, before Ole Gunnar Solskjær signed him for Molde in 2017. Red Bull Salzburg — The Explosion (2019–2020)

Haaland’s breakthrough came after signing for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

Manchester City paid €60 million for Haaland in 2022 and received the most destructive debut season in English history.

Haaland finished the 2024–25 Premier League season with 22 goals in 31 appearances, once again among the league’s top scorers.

Haaland is in a long-term relationship with Isabel Haugseng Johansen, a childhood acquaintance from Bryne. She played for Bryne FK’s women’s team while Erling came through the men’s academy. They have been together since his Dortmund years.
