Who Is Brock Purdy?
Brock Richard Purdy (born December 27, 1999) is an American professional football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He wears jersey number 13. He plays in the National Football League — the highest level of American football.
His story is unlike almost any other in NFL history. He was the very last player drafted. He had the lowest expectations. Yet he rose faster than almost anyone could have predicted.
Purdy goes from “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 2022 NFL Draft to one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Furthermore, in three seasons, Purdy holds a 23-13 regular-season record and has made the Pro Bowl once. He is 4-2 in the playoffs.
Brock Purdy is not just a feel-good story anymore. He is a franchise cornerstone.
Early Life: A Quarterback Born and Bred
Growing Up in Queen Creek, Arizona
Brock Purdy was born on December 27, 1999, in Queen Creek, Arizona. He grew up in a sports-obsessed household. From a very young age, there was only one position on the field he ever wanted to play.
From the age of five, Purdy wanted to be a quarterback. When coaches asked him what position he wanted to play when he started playing tackle football, he answered simply — “quarterback.”
That clarity of purpose never wavered. It drove every practice, every game, and every season that followed.
The Purdy Family: A Household Full of Athletes
The Purdy family is deeply athletic. Brock did not grow up in an ordinary household. Sports were a way of life.
Brock’s younger brother, Chubba, is also a quarterback. He has played for Florida State University, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Nevada. He has primarily served as a backup throughout his college career.
As expected with two football-playing brothers, Brock and Chubba are very competitive with each other. “Ever since we were little, competition has been everything,” Chubba said. “We just always want to win, and we don’t like losing.”
Their personalities, however, differ. Perry High School head coach Preston Jones once noted: “Brock was very serious the second he stepped on the field. Chubba is very light. He’s a jokester. He’s all smiles. But as soon as that ball is snapped, he is 100 percent a competitor.”
Brock’s younger brother, Preston, is also a quarterback who has played at multiple college programs.
High School: Perry High School, Gilbert, Arizona
Purdy attended Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, where he established himself as one of the most coveted quarterback prospects in the state. However, upon graduation, he was rated as only a three-star prospect by 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN.
That modest recruiting ranking would later become one of the most humbling undersells in football history.
College Career: Rewriting the Iowa State Record Books
Arriving at Iowa State (2018)
Purdy played college football at Iowa State University from 2018 to 2021. He arrived as a freshman with something to prove. He wasted no time proving it.
As a freshman, he became the starting quarterback, compiling a 7-2 record with 2,250 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. Purdy was named Big 12 True Freshman of the Year in 2018.
Breaking Records and Rising to Stardom (2019–2021)
In 2019, he broke school records with 3,982 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns. He earned Second-Team All-Big 12 recognition that year.
Despite quieter stats in 2020, he led the Cyclones to a 9-3 record and their first-ever Fiesta Bowl victory. This was a landmark moment for Iowa State football.
In 2021, Purdy led the Big 12 in completion percentage at 71.7% and finished his career as a three-time All-Big 12 quarterback, holding 32 school records.
He earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors in both 2020 and 2021. He was named Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2019.
Iowa State Career Totals
Over his time at Iowa State, Purdy recorded over 12,000 passing yards, 81 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions. He left Ames as the most productive quarterback in Cyclones history. Yet despite that remarkable resume, no team selected him until the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The 2022 NFL Draft: Mr. Irrelevant No More
Pick 262 — The Last Pick in the Draft
The San Francisco 49ers selected Purdy in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 262nd overall pick. This made him “Mr. Irrelevant” — the traditional nickname given to the very last player selected in the NFL Draft each year.
He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $3.73 million with the team. It was a humble beginning. However, it was only the beginning.
NFL Career: The Fastest Rise in Modern Football History
Rookie Season (2022): The Injuries That Changed Everything
Purdy entered his rookie season as the third-string quarterback. Nobody expected him to play. Then, in a matter of weeks, everything changed.
Purdy’s big opportunity came in Week 13 of his rookie season after both the quarterbacks in front of him on the depth chart suffered season-ending injuries. Those two quarterbacks were Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.
In five regular-season starts his rookie season, Purdy went 5-0, completing 67.4% of his passes for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Purdy’s 134.0 passer rating is the fourth-highest in NFL history for a rookie in his first start, with a minimum of 15 attempts.
Moreover, he beat Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his professional debut — a statement no one saw coming. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2022 and was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for December 2022.
Season 2 (2023): A Pro Bowl Season and a Super Bowl Run
The 2023 season was where Brock Purdy announced himself to the world in full.
In 16 starts, Purdy led the 49ers to a 12-4 record. He finished fourth in NFL MVP voting. He completed 69.4% of his passes for 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Purdy owns the franchise single-season records for passing yards (4,280) and passer rating (113.0), both of which he set during the 2023 season.
He topped the NFL in multiple categories in 2023, including yards per pass attempt and passer rating. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2023.
Furthermore, he led the 49ers all the way to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. The 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22 in overtime. It was a painful ending — but an extraordinary journey.
Season 3 (2024): Continued Dominance
The San Francisco 49ers lost in the Divisional Round against the Seattle Seahawks following the 2025 NFL season. Despite the early playoff exit, Purdy continued to add to his impressive statistical legacy. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week in 2025 Week 16, adding to his previous honor from 2023 Week 11.
Career Statistics (Through 2025)
Through the 2025 season, Purdy has recorded 1,353 passing attempts, 919 completions, a 67.9% completion percentage, 84 touchdown passes against 37 interceptions, 11,685 passing yards, and a career passer rating of 104.
The $265 Million Contract Extension (May 2025)
In May 2025, the ultimate validation arrived for Brock Purdy.
The San Francisco 49ers signed Brock Purdy to a five-year contract extension through the 2030 season.
The five-year, $265 million pact ties Purdy to San Francisco through 2030 and ensures his earnings on his second NFL contract will vastly outweigh his first. The former “Mr. Irrelevant” will receive a $40 million signing bonus.
Purdy will receive $181 million in total guaranteed money, with $165.05 million of that coming in the first three years of the contract.
The new deal pays him $53 million annually and guarantees him $181 million. Therefore, the last pick of the 2022 draft has become one of the highest-paid players in the entire NFL.
49ers GM John Lynch admitted he had “no idea how special” Purdy would become — a remarkable admission from the man who drafted him as an afterthought on the final pick.
