Alejandro Garnacho
Who Is Alejandro Garnacho?
Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra is an Argentine professional footballer born on July 1, 2004, in Madrid, Spain. He plays as a winger and currently represents Aston Villa on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
He is one of the most talented young forwards in European football. His overhead kick against Everton in November 2023 is still talked about as one of the greatest Premier League goals ever scored.
However, his career has not followed a straight line. After a difficult spell at Chelsea, he now has a chance to rebuild at Villa Park under manager Unai Emery. The 2026–27 season could define the next chapter of his story.
Early Life: Madrid Roots, Argentine Heart
Born in Spain, Made for Argentina
Alejandro Garnacho was born in Madrid, Spain. His father is Spanish, and his mother is Argentine. Because of his Argentine mother, he chose to represent Argentina internationally — a decision that would eventually lead to Copa América glory in 2024.
Growing up in Madrid, he absorbed Spanish football culture from an early age. However, his Argentine identity remained central to who he is as a player and as a person.
Getafe and the Start of a Football Journey
Garnacho began his youth football career at Getafe in 2015. He showed immediate talent. Therefore, it was not long before Atlético Madrid came calling.
He joined the Atlético Madrid youth academy at the age of around 11. There, he spent several years refining his technique, his pace, and his tactical intelligence. The academy gave him a thorough grounding in Spanish football’s demanding defensive and technical culture.
The Move to Manchester United
In October 2020, Manchester United signed Garnacho from Atlético Madrid for a fee of £420,000. At the time, it looked like a modest investment. It turned out to be a bargain.
He joined the club’s academy at the age of 16. Manchester United had beaten off interest from other clubs — including a reported offer from Real Madrid — to secure his signature.
Career Journey: From Academy Star to Premier League Regular
FA Youth Cup Winner (2022)
Garnacho quickly made his mark in Manchester United’s youth setup. In 2022, he played a key role in United’s FA Youth Cup victory — their first since 2011. He scored two goals in the final, announcing himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the country.
Furthermore, his solo goal in the FA Youth Cup win over Everton was nominated for United’s Goal of the Month award in February 2022.
Senior Debut Under Erik Ten Hag
On April 16, 2022, Garnacho made his senior debut for Manchester United as a substitute in a 1-1 Premier League draw at Leeds United. He was 17 years and 289 days old.
His first senior goal arrived on November 3, 2022, in a Europa League match against Real Sociedad. From there, his momentum was unstoppable.
His rise through the team was rapid. However, it was not without friction. Manager Erik ten Hag was publicly critical of Garnacho’s attitude at one point, after the youngster was late to training on two separate occasions. Captain Bruno Fernandes also called for more professionalism from him.
The Overhead Kick That Stopped the World (November 2023)
On November 26, 2023, Alejandro Garnacho scored what many consider one of the greatest Premier League goals in history.
At Goodison Park, he met Diogo Dalot’s cross from about 15 yards out. He launched himself into the air and unleashed a stunning overhead kick into the top corner. The stadium fell silent. The world took notice.
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, on Sky Sports, said: “That is a magical, magical goal. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a stadium where I’ve seen an overhead kick that good — and I was there for Wayne Rooney’s against Manchester City.”
United boss Erik ten Hag described the finish as “incredible” and “world-class.”
The goal drew instant comparisons with Wayne Rooney’s famous bicycle kick against Manchester City in 2011. It drew comparisons, too, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead strike for Real Madrid against Juventus in 2018. Garnacho, inspired by Ronaldo since childhood, celebrated with a tribute to his idol.
2023–24: A Season of Growth
The 2023–24 season confirmed Garnacho as a genuine Premier League force. He scored seven Premier League goals that season. He also won the FA Youth Cup, EFL Cup, and FA Cup with Manchester United earlier in his career, contributing to the club’s revival.
On August 10, 2024, Garnacho opened the scoring for United in the FA Community Shield against Manchester City. By October 27, 2024, he made his 100th appearance for the club.
In total, Garnacho scored 26 goals in 144 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United. His contribution to the club was significant.
The Fall from Grace Under Ruben Amorim (2024–25)
When Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager, Garnacho’s fortunes changed sharply. Amorim’s tactical system did not suit him. He was frozen out of the first team.
His time at Old Trafford effectively came to an end in the summer of 2025.
Chelsea: A Difficult Year (2025–26)
In August 2025, Chelsea signed Garnacho from Manchester United for £40 million. The deal came with a seven-year contract.
Of his 43 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, only 22 were starts. He played a total of 2,153 minutes, scoring eight goals and providing four assists, though he only found the net once in the Premier League. Four of his goals came in the EFL Cup, two in the FA Cup, and one in the Champions League.
When new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso arrived, he told Garnacho he could not guarantee him regular game time. The writing was on the wall.
Aston Villa: A Loan With a Mission (2026–27)
The Transfer: A High-Stakes Gamble
On July 23, 2026, Garnacho joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The deal carries a conditional obligation to make the move permanent next summer, at a reported fee of around £42.5 million.
The move happened as part of a fascinating transfer chain. Villa sold midfielder Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a British-record £117 million. Then, in the opposite direction, Garnacho came to Villa Park.
Villa manager Unai Emery said: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented and young, and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”
Garnacho is Villa’s fourth signing of that summer window, joining Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse at the Europa League champions.
Early Days at Villa Park
The start of Garnacho’s loan has been challenging. In the opening match against Brighton, Garnacho was introduced as a substitute but failed to influence the game, which ended in a 4-0 defeat for Villa. His subsequent appearance against Arsenal saw him play 13 minutes without contributing to the scoreline, as Villa suffered a 1-0 loss.
International Career: Argentina and the Copa América
Choosing Argentina Over Spain
Despite being born in Madrid and holding Spanish nationality, Garnacho chose to represent Argentina — the country of his mother. This was a decisive moment in his career.
He made his debut for Argentina at under-20 level in 2022, scoring four goals in five appearances.
Copa América 2024 Winner
In the summer of 2024, Garnacho was part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa América in the United States. He played in the tournament but did not get much playing time. He later said: “I was at the Copa América with the whole team. I didn’t play too much, but just being around these players and winning the Copa was an incredible moment.”
He also described playing alongside Lionel Messi as “a dream,” adding: “Hopefully, for the next World Cup, I will be ready to play, and we will try to win.”
Omitted from the 2026 World Cup Squad
Despite being included in Argentina’s 55-man preliminary World Cup squad, Garnacho did not make the final cut of 26 players. Garnacho had not played for the national team for more than 18 months before the World Cup squad was announced, leaving him behind competitors who had become more integrated into Scaloni’s plans.
He last suited up for Argentina over a year and a half ago during the World Cup qualifiers. Furthermore, reports noted that Garnacho had not only struggled on the pitch at Chelsea, but had also become associated with off-field matters that did not help his chances of making the final squad.
The omission stung. But it has also served as a powerful motivation for his loan spell at Aston Villa.
Playing Style: Electric, Direct, and Fearless
Alejandro Garnacho is a left-footed winger. He stands 1.80 m (5’11”) tall and weighs 80 kg. He plays primarily on the left side. However, he can operate on either flank.
His game is built on explosive pace. He is a dynamic dribbler who takes defenders on at every opportunity. He possesses an elite ability to score spectacular goals — as his overhead kick against Everton proved to the world.
He is also a player who wears his heart on his sleeve. His idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, and that admiration shapes his mentality. He plays with ambition, aggression, and an instinct for the big moment.
