Christian McCaffrey was born to former NFL player Ed McCaffrey and Lisa McCaffrey. His parents both attended Stanford University, where they met and later married in April 1992 after a few months of dating.

Against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 80 yards while catching all eight of his targets for 80 yards and a touchdown. He became the first player in Super Bowl history to have at least 75 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards in the same game.

The 49ers lost 25–22 in overtime. It was heartbreaking. However, McCaffrey’s performance remains one of the most complete individual Super Bowl performances by a running back in history.

McCaffrey endured an injury-riddled 2024 season. He started with Achilles tendinitis that forced him to miss the first eight games. McCaffrey returned in Week 10, but was later sidelined after suffering a PCL injury in Week 13. He was shut down for the rest of the year.

On June 4, 2024, McCaffrey signed a two-year extension worth $38 million through the 2027 season, remaining the highest-paid running back in the NFL.

The 2025 Season: Comeback Player of the Year

Then came the greatest comeback story of the 2025 NFL season.

After missing 13 games during the 2024 season due to a litany of injuries, McCaffrey rebounded in a major way in 2025, starting all 17 games for San Francisco.

He rushed 311 times for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns while also leading the NFL in receiving yards by a running back. He caught a team-leading 102 passes for 924 yards and seven receiving touchdowns, finishing the season with 2,126 yards from scrimmage — second-most in the league.

McCaffrey led the NFL with 119 total first downs gained and recorded four 100-yard rushing performances. His 413 total touches led the entire NFL.
