Dave Pirner

Dave Pirner is a renowned American singer and songwriter who is the frontman member of the Soul Asylum rock band.

Early Life:

Dave Pirner taught himself how to play the drums as he had a musical background family.

Career Highlights:

Dave Pirner was a drummer when he was 20 years old in a punk band called “Loud Fast Rules” alongside Karl Mueller on bass and Dan Murphy on guitar. Later he switched to vocal and rhythm guitar with drums on Pat Morley as a new member. Then later again Grant Young joined the band as drummer replacing Morley.

In 1983 after the band members were changed their band name was also changed from “Loud Fast Rules” to “Soul Asylum” and released their first studio album produced by Bob Mould titled “Say What You Will” on August 24, 1984, by Twin/Tone Records.

“Made to Be Broken and While You Were Out” were their second and third albums which were released in 1986 with Twin/Tone Records. Later they released their other albums “Hang Time” in 1988 and “And the Horse They Rode In On” in 1990 with A & M record label.

In 1993 band gained more commercial success and visibility on MTV and VH1 with the tracks “Runaway Train” and “Black Gold” from the album “Grave Dancers Union”.

Columbia record label recorded there three albums including “Grave Dancers Union”, “Let Your Dim Light Shine” in 1995, and “Candy from a Stranger” in 1998.

As of the ’20s, the band released “The Silver Lining” by Legacy in 2006, “Delayed Reaction” by 429 in 2012, “Change of Fortune” by Entertainment One in 2016, and “Hurry Up and Wait” by Blue Élan in 2020.

In 1994, Dave also had a small role in the movie Reality Bites.

He also debuted his solo album “Faces & Names” by Ultimatum Music was released in 2002 and in 2020 he published a book “Loud Fast Words: Soul Asylum Collected Lyrics”.

Dave Pirner was awarded Best Rock Song in the 1993 Grammy Award for his single “Runaway Train”.

Personal Life and Relationships:

Dave Pirner was born into a musical family, his father Donald Dale Pirner, and his mother Arvilla Lynn nee Burrall. He has a brother named Paul Pirner.

He attended East High School from 1979 to 1982 and later in 1985, he graduated his collage from St Olaf College with a BA in political science and philosophy. Then he did university from Rutgers University with a degree in political science.

Dave was married to Karen Brady and had a son Eli Pirner unfortunately they got divorced. He has also dated an actress  Winona Ryder when his band was playing in 1993 MTV Unplugged.
