Early Life:
Bozoma Saint John moved from the USA to Ghana with her family when she was six months old and moved back to the USA after she was twelve years old settling in Colorado Springs. Washington DC and Nairobi, Kenya are some of the places her family has stayed.
Career Highlights:
After Bozoma Saint John did her college Amold Worldwide and Spike Lee’s Spike DDB advertising agencies were the first companies she worked with. She was also the vice president of marketing at the fashion brand Ashley Stewart.
In 2005 as a senior marketing manager, she joined PepsiCo and later she launched PepsiCo’s foray into music festival-based marketing after she was appointed as head of music and entertainment marketing at PepsiCo. She worked in PepsiCo for almost a decade.
After she left PepsiCo she was hired by Jimmy Iovine for Beats Music in 2014 to manage the company’s marketing based on her experience in music marketing. She then relocated to Los Angeles from New York for Beats Music but soon after the company was purchased by Apple.
On June 6, 2017, Uber hired her, and she joined them as the chief brand officer but after working for a year she quit Uber and in June 2018 she joined Endeavor as a chief marketing officer.
Later on June 30, 2020, Netflix announced their new chief marketing officer Bozoma Saint John making her the company’s 2019-2020 fiscal year third CMO and Netflix’s first Black C-level executive. She joined Netflix in August 2020 as her new role in office and later departed in March 2022.
After all this Bozoma Saint John launched the limited series podcast titled “Back to Biz with Katie and Boz” on iHeart Media in May 2020 along with journalist Katie Couric.
On February 21, 2023, she published an autobiography with Viking Press titled “The Urgent Life” where she talked about losing her husband, raising her children alone, and her experiences working as a marketing executive.
In January 2021 she taught a Short Intensive Program (SIP) called “Anatomy of a Badass” to MBA candidates at Harvard Business School.
And in May 2024, she joined as a full-time cast member for the upcoming fourteenth season of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”.
Bozoma Saint John launched an Instagram campaign with Luvvie Ajayi, Glennon Doyle, and Stacey Bendet on the #ShareTheMicNow topic. Later for the same campaign 52 Black women with significant platforms took over 52 White women’s Instagram deeds on June 10, 2020, to highlight the work these women are doing to spark change. Elaine Welteroth, Angelica Ross, Christine Michel Carter, and Gia Peppers are well-known black women whose Instagram accounts were controlled by Saint John. Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Warren, and Diane von Furstenberg are well-known white women whose Instagram accounts were controlled by Gia Peppers.
Saint John has also served at Wesleyan University as a member of the President’s Advisory Council and is also a member of the Black Advisory Board for Impact, an initiative by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Saint also received an indication into the American Marketing Association Marketing Hall of Fame in May 2022.
Personal Life and Relationships:
Bozoma Saint John was born to her father Rev. Dr. Appianda Arthur and her mother Aba Arthur (née Enim). She has a sister named Alua Arthur.
She was married to Peter Saint John in 2003 and has two children daughter named Lael Saint John born May 29, 2009, and Maya Saint John. Unfortunately, her husband died in 2013 due to cancer.
Bozoma enrolled in Wesleyan University and she graduated from the university with a degree in English and African American studies.
