Lady Gaga
40 years old
Who Is Lady Gaga?
Lady Gaga is one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 21st century. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, she is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and cultural force unlike any other.
Her voice is powerful. Her vision is bold. Her impact is generational.
She has won 16 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, three American Music Awards, and three BRIT Awards. Furthermore, in the US, she has earned six number-one singles and six number-one albums.
By 2026, Lady Gaga is not simply a pop star. She is a cultural institution — a woman who has defined what it means to be an artist in the modern era.
Early Life: A Girl from New York With a Piano and a Dream
Born in New York, Raised on Music
Lady Gaga released her debut studio album, The Fame, in August 2008. But long before the world knew her name, she was Stefani Germanotta — a girl growing up in New York City’s Upper West Side with an extraordinary gift for music.
Gaga began to play the piano at the age of four, wrote her first piano ballad at 13, and began playing at open mic nights a year later. Music was not a hobby. It was a calling.
Schooling, Theater, and Early Ambitions
At her high school, she played the lead roles of Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She also studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute for ten years.
Her passion for performance was evident from an early age. Additionally, she even made a small television appearance — she appeared in a small role as a mischievous classmate in the 2001 Sopranos episode “The Telltale Moozadell.”
New York University: The Scholar Who Chose Music
In 2003, Gaga gained early admission to Collaborative Arts Project 21, a music school at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and lived in an NYU dorm. She studied music there and improved her songwriting skills by writing essays on art, religion, social issues, and politics, including a thesis on pop artists Spencer Tunick and Damien Hirst.
However, the classroom could not contain her ambitions. In 2005, Gaga withdrew from school during the second semester of her second year to focus on her music career. It was a bold bet. It paid off in extraordinary ways.
Getting Her Stage Name
Gaga initially signed with Def Jam in 2006, but the contract was short-lived. Nevertheless, after gaining positive attention with her act, Lady Gaga & The Starlight Revue, alongside burlesque star Lady Starlight, Gaga garnered the interest of Interscope Records and their subsidiary label Kon Live. The name “Lady Gaga” was inspired by the Queen song “Radio Ga Ga” — and it stuck forever.
Music Career: From Debut Album to Global Domination
The Fame (2008): The World Meets Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga released her debut studio album, The Fame, in August 2008 with Interscope Records. The dance-pop album received critical acclaim and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
The singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, while the album’s third and fourth singles, “LoveGame” and “Paparazzi,” also made their way into the top ten. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album and was nominated for Album of the Year.
Lady Gaga opened for the New Kids on the Block during their 2008 tour, then headed her own tour, the Fame Ball Tour, the following year.
The Fame Monster (2009) and Born This Way (2011): Conquering the World
The Fame Monster followed as an extended play that deepened her artistic vision. Then came her truly historic moment.
Her second full-length album, Born This Way (2011), explored electronic rock and techno-pop and sold more than one million copies in the first week. Its title track became the fastest-selling song on the iTunes Store, with over one million downloads in less than a week.
Born This Way was more than an album. It was an anthem. It spoke directly to the LGBTQ+ community, to the marginalized, and to anyone who had ever felt like an outsider.
ARTPOP (2013), Cheek to Cheek (2014), and Joanne (2016)
Following her electronic dance music-influenced third album, Artpop (2013), she pursued jazz on the album Cheek to Cheek (2014) with Tony Bennett, and delved into soft rock on the album Joanne (2016).
The relatively understated Joanne (2016) performed poorly until Lady Gaga’s halftime Super Bowl performance in February 2017 brought it favorable attention. Her Super Bowl LI halftime show became one of the most-watched and praised performances in the event’s history.
Chromatica (2020): A Return to Dance-Pop
For her sixth studio album, Chromatica (2020), Lady Gaga returned to her earlier music, mixing disco and electronic pop. The album featured “Rain on Me,” a duet with Ariana Grande, which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Harlequin (2024): Harley Quinn Enters
In 2024, she starred as Harley Quinn in the film Joker: Folie à Deux, which spawned the companion album Harlequin. The album blended cinematic performance with her raw musical identity.
MAYHEM (2025): The Defining Album of Her Era
Gaga’s MAYHEM debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 when it was released March 7.
Gaga spoke about the meaning behind the album’s name. “I’ve felt like I was playing multiple different people throughout my whole career and kind of having to hold the duality of that,” she said. “And that personal mayhem, I think, is echoed also in how I feel about the world sometimes, that the world is in a chaotic place.”
In 2025, she dropped Mayhem, which featured the hit singles “Abracadabra” and “Die with a Smile.”
Lady Gaga set a new record for the most monthly Spotify listeners among female artists in February 2025.
Acting Career: Hollywood’s Unlikely Superstar
A Star Is Born (2018): The Breakthrough Performance
Lady Gaga did not just act in A Star Is Born. She transformed cinema with it.
Lady Gaga earned a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story and received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Shallow” from the film A Star Is Born (2018), in which she also starred.
“Shallow” became a global phenomenon. It topped charts in Australia and the UK. It became one of the defining songs of the decade.
Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) and Other Film Roles
In 2024, she starred as Harley Quinn in the film Joker: Folie à Deux. She also appeared in Machete Kills (2013) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).
The Paris Olympics 2024: A Stage for the World
In 2024, she performed in the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympic Games.
“I hope you love this performance as much as I do,” Gaga wrote in an Instagram post. “And to everyone in France, thank you so much for welcoming me to your country to sing in honor of you — it’s a gift I’ll never forget!”
Awards and Achievements: A Record-Breaking Legacy

Earlier in 2025, “Die with a Smile” snagged the Grammy for Best Pop Duo Performance. Then, at the 2026 Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga won two golden gramophones — the Best Pop Vocal Album award for MAYHEM and the Best Pop Dance Recording trophy for “Abracadabra.”

Personal Life: Love, Health, and Advocacy
Fibromyalgia and Mental Health Advocacy
Lady Gaga has been profoundly open about her personal struggles. In September 2017, Gaga released a documentary titled Gaga: Five Foot Two on Netflix. In the film, she revealed that she has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
She has spoken candidly about PTSD, panic attacks, chronic pain, and mental health. Because of this vulnerability, she has become one of the most powerful voices for mental health awareness in the world.
Lady Gaga is recognized not only for her artistic contributions but also for her advocacy work, particularly through the Born This Way Foundation, which promotes mental health and supports LGBTQ+ rights.
Michael Polansky: Love, Partnership, and Engagement
Gaga and Michael Polansky met in 2019 and got engaged in April 2024.
Michael Polansky is a venture capitalist and entrepreneur. He is also a creative collaborator on Mayhem. As anyone would do for the person they love, Polansky encouraged her to lean into the joy of pop music. “On the Chromatica tour, I saw a fire in her; I wanted to help her keep that alive all the time and just start making music that made her happy,” he told Vogue.
Gaga spoke about Polansky in an interview, calling him her best friend. “He just loves the whole me,” she said. “I learn a lot from him. He’s so supportive. He’s got an incredibly kind heart.”
LGBTQ+ Advocacy
Lady Gaga cultivated a devoted following, particularly among gay men. She acknowledged her own bisexuality. She became particularly outspoken on gay rights, especially same-sex marriage, and was a featured speaker at the 2009 National Equality March in Washington, D.C.
