Who Is Dua Lipa?

Dua Lipa is a British-Albanian singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur. She was born on August 22, 1995, in London, England. Her name “Dua” means love in Albanian. She has no middle name.

She is one of the most decorated pop artists of her generation. Her accolades include seven Brit Awards and three Grammy Awards. Moreover, Time magazine included her in the Time 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024.

Her journey, however, is not simply a music story. It is a story of identity. It is a story of resilience. It is a story of a woman who turned refugee roots into a global empire worth an estimated £90 million.

Today, Dua Lipa stands as a pop superstar, film actress, media founder, skincare entrepreneur, and cultural force — all before the age of 31.

Early Life: Kosovo, London, and the Making of a Global Star

A Family That Fled War

Dua Lipa was born in London to parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, who had fled Kosovo in 1992 at the start of the Bosnian War.

Her family background shaped everything about her. It gave her grit. It gave her gratitude. It gave her a fierce sense of identity. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is an Albanian rock singer turned marketing executive. She has a younger sister, Rina, and a younger brother, Gjin.

Growing up in London, she was exposed to a rich musical world. She was exposed to artists such as David Bowie, Sting, and Radiohead, which influenced her artistic direction.

Moving to Kosovo and Back Again

The family returned to Kosovo when Lipa was 11 years old, but she moved back to London on her own at age 15.

That decision took extraordinary courage. She was a teenager. She was alone in a big city. However, she was certain of one thing — she was going to make music.

She attended the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School there and began pursuing a music career.

From YouTube Covers to a Record Deal

Before the world discovered Dua Lipa, she was posting covers online and building her craft quietly. She began by posting covers on YouTube before being discovered by industry professionals. She signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. From that moment, her rise was unstoppable.

Music Career: Three Albums, Billions of Streams, and a Legacy in the Making

Debut Album: Dua Lipa (2017)

She rose to prominence with her eponymous debut album in 2017, which peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and spawned the singles “Be the One”, “IDGAF”, and the UK number-one single “New Rules”.

“New Rules” was not just a chart hit. It became a generation-defining anthem. Lipa was honoured with the Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Her second number-one single, “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris, was the best-selling song of 2018 in the UK and won the Brit Award for Song of the Year.

Furthermore, she won 2019 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for her collaboration with Silk City, “Electricity.”

Second Album: Future Nostalgia (2020) — The Masterpiece

2020 should have been the year of touring. Instead, a global pandemic arrived. But Dua Lipa responded with one of the greatest pop albums of the decade.

In 2020, Lipa released her second studio album, Future Nostalgia. The singles “Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now” broke onto the U.S. charts, both peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Levitating” spent over 60 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record, and topped the Billboard year-end Hot 100 chart of 2021.

Her 2020 sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, earned six nominations at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards — including Album of the Year — and won Best Pop Vocal Album.

She could not tour due to COVID-19. Therefore, she did something remarkable instead. She offered a live-streamed concert called Studio 2054. The performance included guest appearances by Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Bad Bunny, and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal Football Club. The show was a huge success, with some five million viewers.

She also earned two Guinness World Records during this era — in 2020 for most tickets sold for a livestreamed concert by a solo female artist, and in 2021 for most monthly listeners on Spotify for a female artist.

Third Album: Radical Optimism (2024) — A Bold New Direction

Inspired by psychedelia, Brit-pop, rave, and trip-hop, the album was produced by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. In 2024, Lipa released her third studio album, Radical Optimism, which debuted atop the UK Albums Chart and was preceded by the UK top-ten singles “Houdini,” “Training Season,” and “Illusion.”

The album reached number two in the US. Moreover, as part of her promotional tour, Lipa made a special appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Live from the Royal Albert Hall, which featured a duet with Elton John, was televised in December and released as a live album.

Later that year, she was a headliner at the Glastonbury Festival in England. It was a dream come true. She had previously called Glastonbury “something that lived only in my wildest dreams and highest manifestations.”

“Houdini” by Dua Lipa won Best Choreography at the 2024 VMAs.

The Future Nostalgia Tour (2022)

The Radical Optimism Tour (2024–2025)

Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour saw 90,000 tickets sold in just five minutes for her first Wembley Stadium show, with a total of 180,000 tickets sold within hours for both June 2025 dates.

Both Charli XCX and Jamiroquai joined her on stage at Wembley. It was one of the defining live music events of the year.

Additionally, a second live album, Dua Lipa: Live from Mexico, arrived in May of 2026, recorded at the final stops of her Radical Optimism tour, featuring a performance of “Oye Mi Amor” with Fher Olvera of Maná.

Acting Career: From Barbie to Hollywood

Dua Lipa is no longer just a pop star. She is becoming a screen presence.

Lipa made her film debut in 2023 playing Mermaid Barbie in the hit Barbie movie. She also contributed the single “Dance the Night” to the film’s soundtrack; the single was nominated for two Grammys, including Song of the Year.

She also had a supporting role in the spy film Argylle in 2024.

Furthermore, in 2026, Dua Lipa is set to appear in a new film titled Peaked, marking her growing presence in Hollywood.

Beyond Music: Building a Multi-Platform Empire

Service95 — A Media Platform for the Curious Mind

In February 2022, Lipa launched a weekly lifestyle newsletter entitled Service95 as well as its accompanying podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service.

The platform comprises not only a website but also a weekly newsletter, the podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service, and a book club. All four offer advice, recommendations, stories, and other forms of conversation.

Service95 grew rapidly. By 2025, it expanded to include live podcast events in cities like New York. It reflects Dua’s deep love of literature, culture, and authentic conversation.

DUA Skincare — Beauty Meets Science (2025)

In 2025, Lipa launched DUA, a skincare brand developed in collaboration with Augustinus Bader, debuting with three products: a cleanser, serum, and moisturiser. The range uses the brand’s TFC⁵ technology.

This launch placed her among a growing generation of artists who are building serious business empires beyond their music catalogs.

Fashion Collaborations

In 2023, Lipa collaborated with Donatella Versace on a women’s summer collection called “La Vacanza.” This partnership reinforced her standing in the fashion world as one of the most stylish and sought-after icons of her generation.

Sunny Hill Festival — Giving Back to Kosovo

After the success of her first album, Lipa returned to Kosovo in 2018 and cofounded the Sunny Hill music festival with her father. Lipa, Action Bronson, and Martin Garrix headlined the inaugural event. In 2019 it featured sets by Miley Cyrus and Calvin Harris.

The festival is Dua’s most personal passion project. It connects her to her Albanian roots and to the community that helped shape her identity. The festival returned in 2024 after pandemic-related cancellations.

Personal Life: Love, Roots, and a Wedding in London

Meeting Callum Turner

The couple was first spotted together in early 2024. Turner later revealed the pair met over drinks before a mutual friend’s birthday party. The pair realized they were reading the same book, 2023’s Trust by Hernán Diaz.

It is a love story built on shared intellectual curiosity — something entirely fitting for a woman who runs a book club and a cultural newsletter.

The Wedding (May 2026)

The singer, 30, married actor Turner on May 31 with an Elizabeth Taylor-inspired look. Their wedding ceremony took place at London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall.

Turner, 36, is an English actor known for his roles in recent movies such as the biographical sports drama The Boys in the Boat (2023) and the romantic comedy-drama Eternity (2025).
